Postgraduate FAQs

Got a burning question you need answering about your postgraduate studies?

Applications

  • How long does a Master’s course last?

A Master’s course runs for three trimesters. These are the usual semester dates, but some courses may vary slightly.

  • What are your entry requirements?

For many of our postgraduate programmes, you don’t need to have studied the subject at undergraduate level. Most of our courses require you to have a 2:2 Honours degree, or international equivalent, and some specialist degrees have higher entry requirements. Please check our course pages for the entry requirements for your programme.

If English isn’t your first language, we’ll need evidence of your English language proficiency. You’ll need an IELTS score of between 5.5 and 6.5 overall, depending on your programme, so please check our individual course pages.. We also accept other English language proficiency qualifications. If your English isn’t currently the standard required, you may be interested in our pre-sessional English Language programmes.

Entry requirements for our postgraduate research programmes differ, so please check our research webpages for more information.

  • What is the application deadline?

We don’t have application deadlines for our postgraduate programmes, but recommend that you apply as soon as possible before your course start date to avoid disappointment. Some programmes will close for applications for the next intake when they’re full.

  • When will my course start?

Most of our programmes have a September start, but some courses also offer January and May starts. Check your programme’s start date(s) via our course webpage.

If you’re applying to us from outside the UK and need a student visa, you’ll also need to allow 3-4 weeks to complete this bit of the process.

  • What documents do I need to provide?

You’ll need to provide evidence that you’ve met our entry requirements. We’ll tell you exactly what we’ll need when you start your application on our MyHull portal. The documents we typically need include academic references and exam marks. Some of our international students will need to provide their student visa, if required.

  • I’m an international student and need help with my postgraduate application. Who should I contact?

We have representatives around the world who can support you through your application process and beyond. Please visit the individual country pages on our website to find a representative where you live. If you’re unable to find a representative in your country, our friendly team of advisors will be able to help. Please email us at global@hull.ac.uk.

We also run international student webinars and in-country events that you may find helpful on topics including applications, visas, fees and careers.

Fees and Funding

  • Can I get help to pay for my studies?

If you have home fee status, you may be able to apply for a Master’s Loan.

This contributes towards your degree tuition and living costs. In 2022/23, this amount was £11,836. You only need to start repaying it when you’re earning above £21,000. Applications for this open in June. You can check if you’re eligible via the gov.uk website.

If you studied your undergraduate degree at Hull, you’re automatically eligible for a £1,000 discount (current value for 2023 entry) on your tuition fees through our PGT Scholarship. This discount is only valid if you’re applying to one of our postgraduate taught Master’s. It’s not available for certificate or diploma programmes.

  • How do I pay my tuition fees?

There’s a range of ways you can pay for your tuition fees. These include by debit or credit cards or via a direct debit from your bank. You’ll need to pay the university directly via your MyHull portal. We can’t accept any cash payments made directly to our bank account. Read more about payment methods.

You’ll pay in three instalments: 34% upon enrolment, then 33% on the 4th and 7th month of your course.

  • Do you get a separate maintenance loan?

There isn’t a separate maintenance loan, but if you’re eligible to apply for a Master’s Loan, some of this amount may contribute towards your living costs. It’s important to budget for living costs. Our Finance Support Team can help advise you.

We’re proud that Hull is the UK’s most affordable city*, so your money will go further here.

  • How can I find a part-time job while I study?

Some students take on part-time work during their studies, either to supplement their funds, gain valuable work experience or both. Our Student Futures team has a part-time jobs shop on campus to help you find the right opportunity.

We also have online resources to help, such as Job Teaser. This is our resource for all things careers, where we advertise jobs (part-time, full-time, internships, volunteering, etc). You’ll find this resource more useful after you’ve enrolled to study with us.

In the meantime, follow us on Twitter @HullUniCareers or Instagram @hullunicareers and hear about the different job fairs we run throughout the year, along with sessions about how and where to look for part-time work.

  • Do you offer scholarships?

We do offer a small range of scholarships, awards and bursaries for different postgraduate programmes. They come in different shapes and sizes, with specific application criteria.

If you studied your undergraduate degree at Hull, you’re automatically eligible for a £1,000 discount on your tuition fees through our PGT Scholarship. This discount is only valid if you’re applying to one of our postgraduate taught Master’s. It’s not available for certificate or diploma programmes.

Accommodation

  • What accommodation do you provide for postgraduate students?

If you’d like to live on campus, our luxury accommodation complex, Westfield Court is now the perfect home-away-from-home for our students, following a recent £130 million investment. Our on-campus accommodation is for single occupancy, so is unsuitable for couples or families.

There are plenty of other private accommodation options available near our campus and our students’ union will be happy to help advise you.

After you’ve accepted your offer to study with us, we’ll advise you how to access our accommodation portal to secure your housing.

If you’re progressing from an undergraduate degree at Hull onto a postgraduate programme with us, you’ll receive a discount on some room types in university-owned accommodation.

  • Can I bring my family with me?

We know that some of our postgraduate students have families and may wish to bring them to Hull. We don’t have family accommodation available on our campus. There are plenty of other private accommodation options available nearby and our students’ union will be happy to help advise you.
