What is a foundation year?
A foundation year is an introductory year of study that helps you prepare for a full undergraduate degree. It’s designed to strengthen your subject knowledge, develop essential academic skills and build your confidence before starting university-level learning.
A foundation year may be a great option if you:
- don’t currently meet the entry requirements for your chosen degree
- are returning to education and want a supportive transition
- want to change subject area or explore a new career path
- would benefit from an extra year of preparation before starting your degree
What are the benefits of a foundation year?
Studying a foundation year offers several key advantages:
- Academic preparation: Develop core skills in writing, research, analysis, maths or science-tailored to your subject route.
- Subject-specific learning: Gain an early introduction to essential concepts, practical work, labs or creative practice.
- Confidence building: Settle into university life and learning before progressing to Year 1 of your degree.
- A clear progression route: Move directly onto the full undergraduate course once you meet the progression requirements.
