Freedom of Information
The Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) 2000 creates a general right of access to all types of recorded information held by English, Welsh and Northern Irish public authorities. It also sets out exemptions from that right and places a number of obligations on public authorities.
The FOIA is intended to promote a culture of openness and accountability amongst public authorities and to facilitate better public understanding on how public authorities carry out their duties, why they make decisions they do and how they spend public money.
The University has two main obligations under FOIA:
- Maintaining a Model Publication Scheme (MPS), which outlines the types of information we routinely publish.
- Ensuring anyone making a request is informed, in writing, whether or not we hold the information they've asked for, and if we do, to receive our response within 20 working days.
The Environmental Information Regulations 2004 allow public access to information held by public authorities that relates to the environment e.g. Air, land, noise, energy, waste.
Unlike FOI requests, a public authority has up to 40 days to respond.
The University handles all FOIA and EIR requests in accordance with our Freedom of Information Policy.
The University follows the Model Publication Scheme approved by the Information Commissioner’s Office. This scheme sets out the categories of information we publish or intend to publish.
