What’s the difference between a foundation year and a foundation degree?

The main difference is that a foundation year is an extra introductory year added to the start of a Bachelors degree, while a foundation degree is a standalone two-year qualification. A foundation year prepares you to progress directly into Year 1 of a full undergraduate degree, whereas a foundation degree (FdA or FdSc) is its own qualification that you can later “top up” to a full degree with additional study.

The names sound similar, but the two pathways are designed for different needs, goals and levels of preparation.

What is a foundation year?

A foundation year is an additional year of study built into the beginning of an undergraduate degree.

  • It helps you develop the academic skills, subject knowledge and confidence needed for university-level study.
  • After completing it successfully, you automatically progress into Year 1 of your chosen Bachelors degree.
  • It’s a great option if you don’t quite meet the entry requirements for the full undergraduate degree, if you want to switch subject area, or if you need extra preparation before starting university.

A foundation year is not a standalone qualification – it’s part of your full degree programme.

What is a foundation degree (FdA, FdSc)?

A foundation degree is a two-year, standalone qualification that combines academic study with practical, work-related learning.

  • It’s equivalent to the first two years of a Bachelors degree.
  • Many courses are career-focused and linked to specific industries or professions.
  • After completing a foundation degree, you can usually apply for a Top-Up Year to achieve a full Bachelors degree.

A foundation degree is separate from an undergraduate degree and is not the same as a foundation year.
