Courses are either fully-funded by the NHS, part-funded, or self-funded. For part- and self-funded courses, you may be eligible to apply for loans from Student Finance England, or a Professional Career Development Loan from the government.

What do the course levels mean?

Levels 4, 5 and 6 are undergraduate level courses and modules. You’re an undergraduate student if you are studying for your first degree-level qualification.

Level 7 courses and modules are postgraduate level. Level 7 is typically for those who have completed an undergraduate degree.

  • Community Practitioner Nurse Prescribing [Module]

    This module will enable suitably qualified registered nurses who meet the standards laid down by the Nursing and Midwifery Council to undertake the community practitioner nurse prescribing course. It aims to prepare registered nurses to prescribe safely, appropriately and cost-effectively from the community practitioner formulary for nurse prescribers.

  • Dementia - Responding Positively [Module]

    There are 800,000 people with dementia in the UK with numbers set to rise to over 1 million by 2021. This module aims to provide the health and social care practitioners and carers with an insight into the dementia.

    This module will provide you with the theoretical underpinning knowledge that is required to begin to interpret ECGs in clinical practice.

  • Family Focused Public Health Practice []

    Health Visitors and School Nurses have a key role in ensuring that the health of children, parents, carers, families, communities, and populations are promoted, improved, and protected to create the best foundation for their long-term sustainable health and wellbeing. This module will equip students with knowledge and skills to develop open and meaningful dialogue with children, young people and families, and advanced assessment and communication skills to identify and assess need and prioritise support based on assessed risk. The module will focus on the core skills for Health Visitors and School Nurses in developing interventions to support and empower school-aged children, parents, and families in their life choices to promote health and wellbeing, prevent ill health, manage emerging health risks, and improve ongoing health and life outcomes.

  • First Step Study Skills [Module]

    This module will give you the skills needed for academic study, to build your self-confidence, to familiarise you with current tools and technology, and enables you to think critically about the work you do.

  • Frenulotomy [Module]

    This course is designed to prepare practitioners with the knowledge and skills necessary to assess, diagnose and divide Ankyloglossia (Tongue Tie) in babies.

  • Haematological and Biochemistry Interpretation [Module]

    This module will provide you with the underpinning knowledge that is required to begin to interpret Haematological (the full blood count) and Biochemistry (electrolytes, urea and creatinine and liver function) tests in clinical practice.

  • Health Assessment and Clinical Reasoning []

    The NMC (2022) Standards of proficiency for community nursing specialist practice require the District Nurse to exercise a high level of professional judgement and be capable of complex decision making. They need to be highly skilled in using an evidence-based approach and undertake an individualised holistic assessment. This module will focus on developing the students’ ability to conduct a precise and thorough consultation and holistic patient assessment enabling them to co-produce evidence-based care plans with people.

  • Health Promotion [Module]

    Develop and enhance pre-existing knowledge, skills and experience alongside colleagues from various professions and agencies.

    Develop your knowledge, confidence and competence in providing care for patients with infections.

  • Introduction to Health and Social Care [Module]

    This module will introduce you to the role of the health and social care professional. You'll explore collaborative working within the context of the integrated care agenda and develop an awareness of the key national public health issues.

  • Leadership in Specialist Community Practice []

    Leadership is a fundamental aspect of the specialist community practitioner role for both the Standards of Proficiency for Specialist Community Public Health Nurses (Health Visiting and School Nursing) (SCPHN) and the Standards of Proficiency for Community Nursing Specialist Practice Qualifications (SPQ) District Nurse (DN) awards. The ability to lead teams, services, and individual caseloads, while acting as a role model for good practice are key roles and responsibilities of registered nurses with a SCPHN and DNSPQ qualification. To provide the skills and knowledge for students on these programmes to fulfil these roles, the course will look at a range of topics associated with leadership, with a particular focus on effective collaboration and communication, managing conflict and delegation ensuring the appropriate use of available resources.

  • Learning for the Workplace [Module]

    By studying this module, you'll have the opportunity to identify an issue related to your experience in health or social care, and draw on a range of evidence and information in order to propose a response to that issue.

  • Mental Health and Wellbeing Practitioner: Specialist Adult Mental Health [Course]

    The Mental health Wellbeing Practitioner role has been developed as part of the Department of Health’s NHS Long Term Plan.

  • MSc Midwifery (top-up) [Course]

    This programme is aimed at Midwives who have completed the Postgraduate Diploma in Midwifery at the University of Hull in the last 5 years, to top-up their qualification to an MSc.

  • NEBOSH Environmental Management Certificate [Course]

    Designed for managers, supervisors and employees who have responsibility for managing environment issues as part of their day-to-day duties in any work environment.

  • Non Medical Prescribing [Module]

    This module has been developed following the Government's decision to extend prescribing responsibilities to Nurses, Pharmacists and some Allied Health Professional groups.There are three pathways available on this module tailored to your area of practice.

  • Professional Midwifery Advocate [Module]

    Advocating and educating for quality improvement (A-EQUIP) is the new model and framework of midwifery supervision. This module is designed for midwives wishing to acquire knowledge and skills to become a Professional Midwifery Advocate.

  • Professional Nurse Advocate [Module]

    This module will support in developing the knowledge required to become a Professional Nurse Advocate.

Students are required to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and critical thinking consistently in practice with minimal guidance and supervision by the end of this module.

  • Professional Practice for Specialist Community Nursing (Health Visiting or School Nursing) []

    This module is a practice-based learning module that culminates in the students achieving all of the core standards and field specific proficiencies for their Specialist Field of Practice (Health Visiting or School Nursing). Students are required to demonstrate a high level of knowledge and critical thinking consistently in practice with minimal guidance and supervision by the end of this module.

  • Promoting Health in Individuals and Communities []

    The module will provide students with key theoretical knowledge to prepare them for their role as a Specialist Practitioner (District Nurse) in promoting health in individuals and communities. Being able to engage effectively and work with people in their own homes to support them to make informed decisions to improve their mental and physical health are key roles of the District Nurse. This module will focus on health promotion at individual and community level, the assessment of health needs in partnership with people, families, communities, and populations to support them to take decisions and actions that improve their own mental, physical, and behavioural health and wellbeing and involving families in health promotion. The use of technologies in health promotion will also be explored.

  • Public Health and Health Promotion []

    The module will equip students with the theoretical knowledge to prepare them to practice with a high level of autonomy and innovation as a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse. School Nurses and Health Visitors are required to actively seek out opportunities to promote and improve health services and the quality of health care that is provided to children, parents, carers, and families. The module will focus on equipping School Nurses and Health Visitors with the skills and knowledge in health promotion, for collaborative working with other services while recognising the individual needs of children, young people, parents, and families.

  • Research Methods for Evidence Based Specialist Community Practice []

    Specialist community nurses need to have the knowledge and skills to locate, identify, critically evaluate, and proactively apply multiple sources of evidence and research relevant to people, communities, and populations, to promote health and well-being and prevent ill-health. The module will focus on developing the student’s ability to appraise health and social care evidence and research and to use this knowledge to consider what works in practice, explain what may need to change in practice, and why. The module will allow students to propose and lead on implementing new and innovative ideas and research to inform and improve the health and wellbeing of people across the life course.

  • Science for Health and Social Care [Module]

    Designed for students who wish to gain confidence and skill in the application of scientific knowledge, this module explores the key principles and theories from biology, chemistry and physics to health and the body.

  • Specialist Community Public Health Nursing & District Nursing [Course]

    These programmes are aimed at post-registration nurses or midwives who wish to become a Specialist Practitioner (District Nurse) or a Specialist Community Public Health Nurse (Health Visitor or School Nurse).

Flexible routes into nursing, healthcare and social work

We offer a range of flexible routes into nursing and healthcare including an apprenticeship, Nursing Associate, foundation degree and University Certificate. These options are a great way to learn and gain experience at the same time, without the need for full-time study at the University.
