Working with Families and Communities to Safeguard Children and Young People

Applications are now open for Level 7 study in January 2024.

This module for public health nurses and other community nurses and practitioners, addresses the need for these practitioners to have up to date knowledge of the theory and practice skills to be able to work safely to safeguard children and young people within the context of their families and communities.

The module will explore the following content:

• The legal and policy context of safeguarding work with children, young people and families.
• Theoretical understandings of childhood, youth and the family.
• Working with and responding to the needs of vulnerable children, young people and families (Children with a disability, families experiencing domestic violence, families with substance misuse issues, lone parent families, young carers).
• Working within a safeguarding context with Black and Minority Ethnic children, young people and families and the development of cultural competence.
• Risk and the identification of vulnerability.
• Core assessments for children, young people and their families, and planning for care using ecological/ public health approaches.
• Inter-agency and partnership working to support children and young people within the context of family and community.
• Therapeutic models for supporting vulnerable children, young people and families.
