Community Practitioner Nurse Prescribing

This course is available for UK residents only.

All entrants to this module must meet the following requirements as stipulated by the NMC:

• Current nurse registration on the NMC Professional Register as a registered nurse
• You intend to practice in an area of clinical need for which prescribing from the community practitioner formulary will improve patient/client care and service delivery.
• You must have practiced for a sufficient period (minimum two years) to be deemed competent by your employer in the area you intend to practice in.
• The student must hold appropriate qualifications/ability to study at level 6 (degree level) (will be verified by application form and University)
• Notification of successful completion of the prescribing qualification will be undertaken by the University
• The registrant must record their qualification with the NMC within 12 months of qualification.
• The registrant must receive confirmation from the NMC that their qualification has been recorded on the NMC register prior to prescribing as a community practitioner nurse prescriber.

You will need the following written confirmation from your employer:

• That there is employer support for the student to undertake the programme
• That there is clinical need within their role to justify prescribing
• Agreement to provide support to undertake the programme (Specific trust/employer nomination and completion of pre course criteria)
• That they have been assessed as competent to take a thorough history, undertake a clinical assessment, diagnose in area of speciality.
• They should be able to demonstrate sufficient knowledge to apply principles of prescribing to own area and field of practice.
• They must be able to demonstrate appropriate numeracy skills

In accordance with the NMC Standards for Student Supervision and Assessment (SSSA 2018), all prescribing students require a nominated Practice Assessor and Named Practice Supervisor to support them throughout the module.
