Our Challenge

Understanding wound complications and developing new treatments

The UK National Health Service spends in excess of £8.3 billion per year on wound care. That is more than the NHS spends annually on the treatment of obesity or cancer. Paradoxically, many current wound treatments have limited effectiveness.

Our Wound Innovation Institute brings together academics, clinical researchers and industry to improve our understanding of wound complications and to develop new treatments to help wounds heal.

£48M investment in wound research at Hull

The University of Hull’s world-leading wound research is supported by a £16M award from the UK Research Partnership Investment Fund. This critical and timely support is crucial to an urgent and growing need for innovative diagnostics and effective wound treatments, regionally, nationally and globally.

This investment will enable life-changing, interdisciplinary discovery science, clinical expertise and industry collaboration, transforming patient recovery and reducing the burden on the NHS.

Our partnerships

Powerful partnerships to transform wound care

Developed in collaboration with a consortium of industry partners, including Polaroid Therapeutics (PTx) and Reckitt, the Institute is at the forefront of global skin and wound research.

We are working closely with the NHS, industry and those impacted by problem wounds to understand the causes of wound infection, and poor wound healing and translate research into real-world treatments.

We are finding solutions for effective wound management by bringing together the right experts, facilities and resources to tackle the challenge, head on.

Our people

With world‑leading researchers, NHS clinicians and industry partners working side by side, our multidisciplinary team at the Wound Innovation Institute is dedicated to developing effective, real‑world solutions.
