Overview

£16M investment in wound research at Hull

The University of Hull’s internationally-leading wound research has recently been supported by £16M from Research England. This investment will deliver world-class research facilities and cutting-edge equipment to our new Wound Innovation Centre in East Yorkshire.

This critical and timely support is crucial to an urgent and growing need for innovative diagnostics and effective wound treatments, regionally, nationally and globally.

The Wound Innovation Centre, has been developed in collaboration with a consortium of industry partners, including Polaroid Therapeutics (PTx) and Reckitt, at the forefront of global skin and wound research.

Our translational wound research centre is uniquely positioned to rapidly translate new discoveries to the clinic, transforming quality of life for those impacted by chronic wounds.

The challenge

Understanding wound complications and developing new treatments

The UK National Health Service spends in excess of £8.3 billion per year on wound care. That is more than the NHS spends annually on the treatment of obesity or cancer. Paradoxically, many current wound treatments have limited effectiveness.

Our Wound Innovation Centre brings together academics, clinical researchers and industry to improve our understanding of wound complications and to develop new treatments for wounds that fail to heal.

Partnerships

We are transforming wound care treatment

Our region is an internationally important hub for health research and innovation and we are proud to be a catalyst for new discoveries in the treatment of wounds.

We are working closely with the NHS, industry and those impacted by problem wounds to understand the causes of wound infection, and poor wound healing.

We are finding solutions for effective wound management by bringing together the right experts, facilities and resources to tackle the challenge, head on.

Our research

Expertise to build innovation in wound care

The University of Hull is a world leader in impactful biomedical, clinical and applied health research.

Our Wound Innovation Centre, located on the University of Hull’s campus and at Castle Hill Hospital, in the East Riding of Yorkshire provides a unique environment in which world-leading teams can undertake discovery research and translate this into innovative wound care treatments.

Extensive refurbishment on our campus and at Castle Hill Hospital, part of Hull University Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust, provides world-class clinical facilities for early-stage wound treatment studies.

Our impact

Fundamental research to change lives

Our new centre will drive world-leading discovery and applied research to transform the prevention and treatment of chronic wounds.

It builds on research at Hull York Medical School and the University of Hull into skin health and wound healing, working with industry and the NHS. New facilities will create a national hub where future researchers develop life-changing treatment for chronic wounds.

This will be unique in the UK, fostering national and international funding bids and driving innovation in wound treatment, an area too often overlooked.
