Research in the School of Sport, Exercise and Rehabilitation Sciences

Researchers within the School of Sport, Exercise & Rehabilitation Sciences conduct internationally excellent and world leading research across two main themes:

  • Lifelong Athlete Development & Wellbeing
  • Clinical Exercise Science & Rehabilitation

Some of our research in the School spans both themes, as it has important implications for both elite-level sport, rehabilitation and the preservation of health and wellbeing. Examples include our research into injury prevention and rehabilitation, the psychophysiology of fatigue and functional ability, digital technologies and artificial intelligence, pedagogy and evidence-informed practice.

In a recent national audit of research undertaken by staff in the school, 86% of research outputs were rated as being either internationally excellent or world leading1.

The research conducted by staff in the School positively impacts both practice and policy in sport and health settings, with 75% of our impact being deemed world leading. Our research is funded by organisations such as the International Olympic Committee, UEFA, the National Institute for Health Research and major health charities, including Yorkshire Cancer Research.

Research strengths

Lifelong Athlete Development and Wellbeing

The overarching purpose of research within this theme is to support athletes and coaches to enable them to perform at their best and/or support their psychological well-being.

Research within this theme is diverse and utilises multiple methods to answer important research questions. Accordingly, a variety of research methods are used to assess different constructs ranging from maturation of academy soccer players to the experiences of grassroots coaches. For example, research activities include assessing the influence of growth, maturation, and talent identification among high-level soccer players, attempts to understand the use of performance enhancing drugs and develop educational programmes for athletes and coaches, along with trust and trustworthiness in community sports coaching.

Other areas of expertise within this theme include understanding more about the nature of perfectionism among athletes, and the negative impact this can have on anxiety, depression and anger, in addition to how to support elite athletes through transitioning into retirement. The latter project is part of a Team GB PhD Research Cluster, which is being led by the School.
