Joanne Black
Joanne is a BDA and HCPC-registered dietitian. Before joining Hull as Programme Director, she practised as a clinical dietitian as a team leader in the local NHS trust, but left to establish and lead this exciting new Masters at the University.

About Joanne Black
Joanne is a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy and an experienced dietitian and academic with over 17 years in clinical practice and higher education. She currently lectures on and leads the MSc Nutrition and Dietetics (pre-registration) programme at the University of Hull, where she has successfully designed and implemented an innovative curriculum that gained BDA accreditation and HCPC approval within her first year in post.
Her academic leadership spans curriculum development, quality assurance and strategic oversight of practice-based learning. Joanne is module lead for several clinical and professional modules and serves as Admissions Lead for both home and international learners. She is also the Faculty AHP Professional Lead for Fitness to Practice and contributes to university-wide panels and task groups.
Joanne’s clinical background includes specialist roles in stroke, neurosciences and surgical dietetics, with a strong focus on service development and team leadership. She has held senior NHS roles, including Acting Deputy Head of Dietetics, and led initiatives such as the implementation of the IDDSI Dysphagia Programme and the region’s first Nutrition Apprenticeship scheme.
Her external engagement includes serving as External Examiner and Advisor to other MSc dietetic programmes, contributing to national BDA and OHID working groups and founding the ‘PebbleCAT ’ dietetic network, to support the standardised implementation of the BDA's Common Assessment Tool. Joanne is a published author and active researcher, with recent work focusing on dietetic education models, enteral feeding and nutritional wellbeing.
Joanne is passionate about shaping the future dietetic workforce through compassionate leadership, innovative education and collaborative practice.
Joanne is an accredited member of the British Dietetic Association (BDA) and its Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Group (PENG), as well as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
