The interdisciplinary Energy and Environment Institute at the University of Hull brings together the skills and capabilities of leading researchers to tackle global challenges related to climate change and population growth and their consequences for society and livelihoods. We work within four themes at the interface between sustainable energy and environmental resilience:

The Challenge
Our climate is changing and sea level is rising. The world’s population is expected to reach 9 billion by 2050, forcing people to inhabit marginal areas. This will dramatically increase flood risk, create huge pressures on vital resources and present immense waste management challenges.

What we do

We aim to leverage partnerships and accelerate innovation pathways to ensure that our research provides the evidence base for policy makers and sets new research agendas.

Future-focused, our research will guide understanding of the ways in which we, as a global community, have to live differently in order to carve out a sustainable future in which vulnerabilities are reduced, societal resilience is enhanced and standards of living are maintained and grown across the globe.

Our work

RAMESES
We’re exploring the evolution of flood risk on the Mekong Delta in Vietnam, home to 18 million people and slowly drowning as sea-levels rise.

Ark
The first of its kind anywhere in the world, Ark will combine simulated full-scale urban and rural environments to provide realistic training scenarios, and large-scale research and innovation infrastructure.

Hydralab+
We’re one of 24 partners awarded a major European Union research grant of almost €10 million to predict how our rivers, estuaries and coasts will be affected by environmental change.

We’ve surveyed 450 households in flood affected areas of Hull to find out concerns about flooding and views of flood management, partnering with Living With Water on flood resilience.

Plastics Collaboratory
We aim to understand the pathways and interactions of plastics in the environment and develop new pathways to an enhanced circularity in plastics use.
