The Challenge

Today’s interconnected world presents novel challenges and opportunities for business and society. The interplay of social, technological, environmental and geo-political factors confronts decision makers with unprecedented complexity. Our challenge is to develop the new concepts and methodological approaches needed to address that complexity.

The Approach

We work in trans-disciplinary teams, collaborating with practitioners in public, private and third-sector organisations to develop ways of addressing complexity.

Our fundamental research in critical systems thinking, cybernetics, information systems and complex systems science, focuses on developing concepts, theories and methodologies to identify and define systemic properties and behaviours, and to explain how and why these arise.

Our ideas and methods are tested and refined in a broad range of application areas including health, policy analysis, development, resilience and sustainability of socio-economic systems and the environment, digital economy and society, organisational transformation, food security, cybersecurity, sustainable tourism, low-carbon economy, evaluation, stakeholder engagement, radicalisation and marginalisation, innovation, conflict management and community operational research.

Aims

OUR AIMS

  • Our work is critical for addressing complex problem situations and anticipating the (often unintended) consequences of interventions, and for designing structures, actions and strategies for innovation, resilience and sustainability
  • We are concerned with understanding, explaining and engaging with systems and systemic phenomena in complex socio-economic systems at all scales, from the emergence of local community action and business ecosystems through to the impact of global policy interventions

Health

Our trans-disciplinary research in health takes a holistic view: our projects focus on understanding origins of challenges and developing ways of addressing them. We work with practitioners and policy makers to develop and evaluate strategies and interventions to improve healthcare delivery, reduce inequalities, and promote well-being across all socio-economic groups.

Food security

Our systemic research agenda focuses on the complex web of food production and supply globally, addressing the environmental, social, political, economic and technological aspects of food production and consumption.

Protest

Socio-Economic Development, Resilience and Sustainability

Our research addresses the challenge of developing systemic resilience and sustainability in societies challenged by climate change, globalisation, and prevalent economic and geo-political forces.

Environmental Sustainability

Our transdisciplinary research in this domain focuses on developing systemic solutions to mitigate or prevent the impact of environmental stressors in the face of climate change.

computing-technology

Digital Economy and Cyber Social Systems

The digital revolution and emerging information and communication technologies are reshaping the social, economic and political landscape.  Our research focusses on challenges and opportunities that this presents to business and society.
