What exactly does Study Abroad mean?

It’s a term often used by universities to describe a range of international opportunities including exchange programmes, summer schools, field trips and volunteering.

At Hull, when we talk about Study Abroad, we typically mean our formal Exchange Programme where you spend either a trimester or a full academic year studying your subject at one of our partner universities around the world.

Our Placement and Study Abroad Team works with our faculties to identify suitable partner universities around the world. Ones that can complement and expand your studies here. Our growing portfolio includes partners across Europe, the USA, Canada, China, South America, and more.

Summer Opportunities

We also offer other types of international experiences to our students that don’t have to be linked to your degree.

The benefits of studying abroad

If not here, then where?

We provide the opportunity; you decide the destination.

With more than 150 partner universities around the globe to choose from, the world is literally your oyster.

But remember, our Exchange Programme is specific to your department and area of study, so you’ll need to choose an option that’s available for your subject.

Duration

Trimester Abroad

For our Psychology, Politics and Politics, Philosophy and Economics programmes, Study Abroad is available for a trimester only.

This is integrated into the first term of your Level 6 studies, which would be the third year of a standard undergraduate degree.

Year Abroad

For other subjects that offer a Study Abroad option, this takes place over a full academic year. This extends a standard undergraduate degree from three to four years, with Study Abroad taking place in year three. In this case, you’ll then return to complete the final year of your degree at Hull.

Tuition fees and funding

You do not pay a tuition fee to your host university overseas for either a Study Abroad year or trimester as part of our Exchange Programme.

If you are spending a trimester abroad, you will still have to pay your full tuition fee to Hull. For a year abroad, you will pay a reduced retainer fee at Hull. This is calculated at 15% of your annual tuition fee and is typically covered by your Tuition Fee Loan as normal.

As you are still paying tuition fees at Hull, you continue being a Hull student while overseas. This gives you access to all of our services and support teams, including the Library, Student Support, and Students’ Union facilities.

Remember, you’ll still need to pay for accommodation, books and other study materials that you would require, but many students are able to get financial support to help with studying abroad and our team can advise on what you might be eligible for.

How to apply

The easiest way to participate in our Study Abroad programme is to apply for a degree that includes a year or trimester abroad. But don’t worry if you haven’t selected a course with Study Abroad from the start, you will still have time to transfer to this option in your second year.

Our Placements and Study Abroad Team and Academic Coordinators offer personalised advice and guidance on choosing the right destination, completing the application process and module selection.

Studying abroad has truly been the most amazing experience and I couldn’t recommend it anymore. You learn a lot about both life and the subject you’re studying. There’s never a boring day: you're constantly exploring the city and the culture, even wh
