



This part-time Postgraduate Certificate prepares you for a career as an educator in professional practice and has been developed in response to demand from local NHS trust and private healthcare providers.
Using the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) standards for learning and assessment, you’ll gain the skills and knowledge to teach, mentor and assess other like-minded professionals from a range of healthcare backgrounds.
Plus, our programme will help develop your own leadership skills – and can be the first step towards a PGDip or MSc in Health Studies if you wish to continue studying.
About this course
Our programme offers a blended approach towards study, with your time spent either learning online or in our award-winning health facilities on campus.
Learning methods include workshops, discussions, group work and lead lectures – enabling you to play an active part in your learning. Plus, you’ll be further supported by our virtual learning environment.
Our core modules will give you a solid foundation in all aspects of the role including practice; establishing effective working relationships; evidence-based practice; leadership; creating an environment for learning; facilitation of learning; assessment and accountability and evaluation of learning.
You’ll also have the opportunity to explore an educational issue within your own sphere of practice as part of a work-based module.
Students on this course will usually have prior experience as a mentor or assessor, as well as evidence of academic study within the past five years. However, all applications will be considered on individual merit.
Module options
For a full Masters degree, you'll study 180 credits over the duration of your course. Some programmes offer a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) qualification or a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) qualification. For a PGDip, you'll study 120 credits, and for a PGCert, you'll study 60 credits.

Elaine is programme director for our PGCert Practice Educator course. She has 38 years of nursing experience within endoscopy, gastroenterology and surgery. She is also a trained colonoscopist and continues to teach and empower others in practice.

Lisa Jennison
Senior Lecturer in Advanced Practice
Lisa began her career as a nurse before completing midwifery and health visitor training. With an MSc in Health Studies and over 30 years' experience, she specialises in leadership and education, holding a number of roles outside of the University.
Entry Requirements
What do I need?
When it comes to applying for this Postgraduate Taught degree, you'll need an Undergraduate degree (or equivalent). For this course, you'll need a 2:2 from a relevant bachelor's degree.
The programme is designed for graduates who have a studied a subject that is relevant to this course.
If you’re an undergraduate student at Hull, you’re guaranteed a fast-track route to this postgraduate degree, as long as you meet the entry requirements.
In order to ensure our students have a rich learning and student experience, most of our programmes have a mix of domestic and international students. We reserve the right to close applications early to either group if application volumes suggest that this blend cannot be achieved.
