Planning your next step in postgraduate study

Whatever’s driving you, if you’re ready to take the next step with a postgraduate taught degree, you’ve come to the right place.
Taught postgraduate degrees – like an MA or MSc – offer a structured learning experience designed to sharpen your expertise and grow your skills in a specific field.
Are you an international student?
The information here is for UK students applying to Hull. Visit our international applying section for the information you need.
Which type of postgraduate course is right for you?
If your ambitions lean more towards independent exploration and original research, a Masters by Research (MRes) or a PhD might be the path for you.
These research degrees have a different application process and requirements – explore our postgraduate research guide to learn more.
Check the full entry requirements for your course
Our courses all have different entry requirements, so make sure you know exactly what's required for the course you're interested in before you start your application.
What if you don’t have a degree already?
A degree is usually required for entry into our postgraduate programmes, but we welcome applicants from diverse academic backgrounds.
If your degree is in a different subject from the one required, we may still consider your application if you have at least three years of professional experience in a relevant field.
To check if your background aligns with our requirements, use our course search tool to find the programme you’re interested in. You can then review the full entry requirements on the course page to see if it’s suitable.
Make your application online
The easiest way to apply for one of our postgraduate degrees is to submit an application online. You can do this by hitting the ‘Apply now’ button on our course pages.
The application is easy to complete abut make sure you add any supporting documents requested in your application. These may vary depending on which course you’re applying for – some may ask for a personal statement, others might require a portfolio of your previous work.
You can submit applications for multiple courses if you’re interested in more than one.
Once you’ve submitted your application, you’ll receive an email confirmation. Our Postgraduate Admissions team will then start to review your application.
A few of our postgraduate courses, such as MA Social Work, have a slightly different application process and require you to apply through UCAS instead. Use the search tool above or view your course page to get full details on the application process for your course.
Interviews and auditions
Some degrees may require you to take part in an interview or an audition before we can offer you a place. If that’s the case, don’t be alarmed – just see it as your chance to show us how passionate you are about studying with us.
Before your interview, read your personal statement again, as you might be asked to expand on some of the points you made. Demonstrating knowledge about your subject and discussing your future ambitions are also great ways of proving your suitability for your course.
Remember, an interview or audition isn’t just about us deciding whether you’re right for us. It’s an opportunity for you to ask us questions as well, to help you make the right decision about where you want to study.
Receiving your offer
If we’re satisfied that you’ve met all of the conditions of entry for your chosen degree, we’ll email you to let you know if you’ve been successful in getting a place.
If you would like to defer the start of your course, you need to email pgadmissions@hull.ac.uk. The Postgraduate Admissions team will then contact the academic department for approval.
Your next steps once you’ve applied
You’ve made your move, now it’s time to get everything in place for what comes next. Because your future isn’t just waiting – it’s already unfolding.
