Documents you’ll need to apply for a Student Visa

To apply for a UK Student visa, you’ll need to gather the necessary documents. The documents you need will depend on your personal situation. Below is a guide on what to submit. Make sure to include all required documents. Failure to do so could result in your visa being refused.

Mandatory for all applicants

Current Passport

Ensure your passport is valid for the duration of your stay in the UK or for at least 6 months from the start of your course. If your passport is not valid for the duration of your stay in the UK, you should check with your national authority whether you will be able to replace it in the UK.

Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS)

After you accept your offer and meet all the conditions of your course offer, we’ll send you a reference number called a Confirmation of Acceptance for Students (CAS) and further information that we provided to UKVI. You must enter this reference number on your Student Visa application and apply for your visa as soon as all other documents are ready.

Proof of finances

When you apply for a Student Visa, you must prove that you have enough money to pay for your course fees and living costs – e.g. bank statements, scholarship or sponsor letters. If you are bringing your partner or children, you must prove that you can support them as well.

Required in specific cases

When you get to the UK

From 1st January 2025 UKVI moved to a digital immigration status system ‘eVisas’. You must set up your eVisa account to have access to your digital visa. Remember to link your current passport to your eVisa account.

If there are any errors on your eVisa, you must report this to UKVI.

Translations

Any documents not in English must be accompanied by an official translation, certified by a registered translator

Differential evidence requirement

Nationals from some countries may not need to provide certain documents, such as proof of finances or academic qualifications, when applying for a UK Student visa.

However, you must still prepare all required documents, as UKVI may request them during processing. If you are unable to provide this evidence, your visa application is at risk of being refused.

Check if your country qualifies under paragraph ST22.1 of the Immigration Rules.

Financial evidence and student visa application inside the UK

If you have lived in the UK with a valid visa for at least 12 months before submitting your online visa application and you intend to submit your visa application inside the UK, you do not need to submit evidence of finance in support of your visa application.

Further information

Double-check all requirements and ensure you meet deadlines. If you have any questions, consult the University’s International Engagement and Compliance team or visit the UK Government visa website. You can find more information on the UKCISA and UK Government websites.
