Postgraduate Research application Guide
Learn how to apply to the University of Hull as an international postgraduate taught student. From choosing your course to accepting your offer, applying for a visa and accommodation.
Start your research journey here
Applications for postgraduate research courses are made directly through the relevant course page on the University of Hull website.
You can use one of our approved agents in your country to support you with your application. Find our approved Education Agents on your country page.
You can apply to multiple programmes, but we recommend focusing on a few well-chosen options rather than submitting many applications.
Check the entry requirements
Visit your country page to find your entry requirements for your country. Entry requirements vary by programme, so make sure you check your course page too.
English language requirements
International students may be required to take one of our recognised English Language Tests or provide other proof of English proficiency. Check our English Language Requirements. If you do not meet the requirements, you may receive an offer on the condition you complete one of our pre-sessional English courses.
Get in touch to talk about your research
It’s a good idea to get in touch before you go too far with your application to make sure that our academic expertise aligns with your own research interests, or to make sure that you are the right fit for one of our scholarships.
If you have selected an area of expertise you are interested in from the list above, you can contact the Postgraduate Admissions Tutor. Alternatively, you can press ‘find out more and apply’ where you will find a list of all the academics who act as supervisors in that area. You can then view their profiles and contact whoever you think would be most aligned with your interests.
If you are interested in one of our PhD scholarships, visit the project page to find out who to contact.
Submit your application
Once you have chosen your course you can apply online from your course page.
You will be asked to provide:
- Full name, date of birth and nationality
- Contact details and passport information
- Visa requirement history
- All current and pending qualifications, including:
- School names and dates attended
- Degrees, diplomas, or certificates earned
- Transcripts and certificates for each qualification
- WAEC/NECO results (include scratch card if applicable and already taken)
- English language proficiency certificate (e.g., IELTS, TOEFL)
- Employment history: Details of any full- or part-time paid employment.
- Personal statement: Explain why you want to study this course and why you have chosen the UK. Read our personal statement guide here.
- References: Provide contact details for a referee
- Agent details (if you are using one)
You can apply for a postgraduate course at any time. We advise you to allow plenty of time to apply, receive your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS) and apply for your visa. Please consider the start date of your course and all the arrangements you need to make in preparation for the start of your programme with us.
Applying with an agent
Want support with your application? Our network of Education Agents can help you apply directly to the university - from choosing a course to applying for a visa. Learn more about how an agent can help and how to find one on your country page.
Accept your offer
We will review your application and will send you our decision. You then need to accept or reject your offer on the MyHull Portal.
There are two types of offers:
- Conditional offer: You must meet certain conditions (for example, you are awaiting exam results)
- Unconditional offer: You have met all the entry requirements
ATAS certificates
Some science or technology programmes may require an Academic Technology Approval Scheme (ATAS) certificate. This is a requirement of the UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office. Your offer letter will confirm if this applies to you.
Pay your tuition fee deposit
Once you have accepted your offer, you will need to pay a tuition fee deposit to secure your place before your Confirmation of Acceptance of Studies (CAS) can be issued to you (see the next step). The deposit is deducted from the total cost of your tuition fees.
Applicants who are sponsored, have a full-fee bursary/scholarship or have completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Hull are exempt from paying a deposit.
Receive your CAS and apply for your visa
Once you have met all the conditions of your offer and paid your deposit, we will issue your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS). You will need this to apply for your student visa.
To apply for your visa, you will also need your passport and may need to provide additional documents. You will pay an application fee and the healthcare surcharge, which gives you access to the UK’s National Health Service (NHS).
Degree preparation course
If you need to complete a degree preparation course to join one of our undergraduate or postgraduate programmes you may be able to do this through our partner, OnCampus, part of the Cambridge Education Group.
Visit the OnCampus website to find out more about the application process and step-by-step guidance on applying for your visa, accommodation and journey to Hull.
