What is a tuition fee deposit?
Most international students (those determined as overseas for fees purposes) are required to pay a tuition fee deposit of £4,000 before we can confirm your place on one of our courses.
If you are required to pay a tuition fee deposit, you will be informed in your offer letter from us.
Once it has been paid, the deposit will be deducted from your course tuition fee and included in your Confirmation of Acceptance for Studies (CAS), if you need one.
Exemptions from tuition fee deposits
All international undergraduate, postgraduate taught and postgraduate research students are normally required to pay a tuition fee deposit.
However, there are some exemptions. You will not need to pay a deposit if one of the following applies:
- Your tuition fees are fully funded by a University-approved financial sponsor.
- You are in receipt of a full-fee scholarship or bursary from the University of Hull.
- You have completed an undergraduate degree at the University of Hull and are progressing directly onto a postgraduate programme of study.
- You are studying an ONCAMPUS course.
- You are an MA Social Work student.
When do I need to pay my tuition fee deposit?
The deposit can be paid any time after you receive your offer letter from us.
We recommend that you pay as soon as possible and ideally at least 8 weeks prior to the start of the date of your programme.
We are not able to guarantee your place until the full deposit has been received. The University reserves the right to stop accepting deposit payments once course places are full and, as a result, may defer your offer to the next available intake.
The following questions and answers should answer any further queries you have about tuition fee deposits.
How do I pay?
You can pay your deposit in the MyApplications tab within the MyHull portal as soon as you have received an offer letter from the University.
Who can be a financial sponsor?
Financial sponsors must be known and contactable, and have a formal agreement in place between the organisation and the University. They can be organisations such as:
- Government bodies (such as a ministry, embassy, or other government department)
- UK-funded government scholarship programmes (such as Chevening)
- Overseas universities
- Employers and companies
Your financial sponsor must confirm your sponsorship in writing. This is in the form of a financial sponsorship letter, which must be on the organisation's official headed paper and include:
- your name, student/UCAS ID, course title and academic year of study.
- the financial sponsor's up-to-date business address, website, valid business email address (not a personal email address) and business contact telephone number.
- The amount of funding and duration of your studies.
- The financial sponsor's company registration number. For sponsors based in the UK, this is a VAT number.
- The financial sponsor’s organisation purchase order (PO) number or reference number (applicable to organisations who pay by invoice).
- Details on where the invoice should be sent if this is different to the address on the letter.
Does it matter if I receive a conditional or unconditional offer?
No. You can pay your deposit after you receive either a conditional or unconditional offer letter from us. You can pay your deposit at any point after receiving an offer, but ideally no later than 8 weeks prior to the start of your course.
What do I do if I applied less than 8 weeks before my course starts?
We will still require the deposit to be paid as quickly as possible and will not reject payment, but you need to consider whether there is time for you to make a successful visa application (if relevant) and then any necessary travel arrangements to be able to join the programme at the start.
