Dr Cassie Kill

Dr Cassie Kill is a Lecturer in Education at the University of Hull, teaching across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including on matters of equality and inclusion, voice and research methods.

Before her PhD, Cassie worked in community arts, galleries and heritage education for over 15 years at organisations including Site Gallery, Museums Sheffield and various grassroots organisations. As a freelance consultant, she has also helped cultural organisations to improve their participatory practices.

Dr Kill was a awarded a doctorate in Education from the University of Nottingham. Her thesis - entitled ‘The hospitable institution? Researching participation in a gallery youth collective’ - was a collaborative award with Nottingham Contemporary gallery. She used ethnographic methods to explore the contradictions of participation in the gallery and her own research methods alike.

• Leading a Wellcome Trust funded project working with a disability arts group, The Professors, to explore their arts practice as an inclusive and collaborative mode of knowledge production (An invitation to listen, WAARC),
• Carrying out ethnographic studies of youth voice and citizenship, including with a feminist graffiti collective and a DJing education project (Speaking Citizens, AHRC),
• Delivering a qualitative study of a diversity initiative in TV production (SIGN, AHRC),
• Carrying out the qualitative elements of a mixed methods study about gendered workforce inequalities and young women's experiences of earning whilst learning (L-earning: rethinking young women's working lives, ESRC).
