Our research in social justice is helping to drive a fairer future. The world-renowned Wilberforce Institute is leading the way in challenging and disrupting injustices through the investigation of historical and contemporary enslavement, emancipation and related forms of exploitation and injustice.
Our work seeks to amplify the voices of underrepresented groups and shine a light on inequality, to help make meaningful change happen. For example, we’re working to connect people experiencing poverty with civic leaders, building trusted long-term relationships to address poverty.
We’re also addressing pressing issues across the spectrum of crime and social justice - from the vital work of Professor Iain Brennan into violence prevention and knife crime to the pioneering project of Dr Jo Metcalf, who is leading the first UK creative writing workshops for prison officers and staff.

From modern slavery to gender equity and crime prevention, our work is empowering underrepresented voices and creating fairer futures. Explore some of the ways our research is making a lasting impact.

Simon focuses on research in modern slavery, victimology, restorative justice and community safety.
As Director of the Wilberforce Institute, he leads a world-leading team that investigates historical and contemporary forms of enslavement and exploitation.

Professor Iain Brennan led a first of its kind independent evaluation of Violence Reduction Units (VRUs), which found they have significantly reduced the numbers of young people being admitted to hospital with knife wounds.

Professor Lisa Jones is amplifying climate‑resilience stories from Vietnamese ethnic minority women, to help shape fairer, more sustainable tourism.
