About this course

This programme provides in-depth knowledge and expertise for those looking to become leaders in the field of strength and conditioning. You’ll deepen your knowledge in key areas, including strength and conditioning for performance athletes, clinical populations and injury, alongside furthering your knowledge and understanding of social theory to enhance your coaching effectiveness and build stronger coach-athlete relationships.

The programme includes practical placements and a research project, giving you the opportunity to explore cutting-edge topics in strength and conditioning. Also, with our strong industry connections, you'll have no problem building a professional network with links such as Hull FC, Hull Kingston Rovers, and Team GB. By the end of the programme, you'll be equipped with the skills and experience to excel in a competitive and evolving field.

You’ll benefit from access to state-of-the-art facilities, including our newly built strength and conditioning suite, our recently renovated £16 million Allam Sport Centre, our advanced performance analysis lab, and our dedicated sport rehabilitation suite. You’ll also be taught by experts who have extensive experience in professional, semi-professional and amateur sports, rehabilitation, and clinical practice.

Module options

For a full Masters degree, you'll study 180 credits over the duration of your course. Some programmes offer a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) qualification or a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) qualification. For a PGDip, you'll study 120 credits, and for a PGCert, you'll study 60 credits.

  • Strength & Conditioning for Performance Enhancement

    This dynamic module explores how the human body adapts to exercise and advanced training, combining the latest in periodisation theory, performance monitoring, and cutting-edge training methods. Students will gain hands-on coaching experience in our state-of-the-art Strength and Conditioning suite, while learning to use industry-leading technologies to assess and enhance athletic performance. With a strong focus on real-world application, this module equips students with the tools and knowledge to design and deliver high-impact training programmes in elite performance environments.

  • Applied Sociology of Strength & Conditioning

    This thought-provoking module explores the social and political dynamics of strength and conditioning through a critical, sociological lens. Students will examine how relationships, power structures, and cultural norms shape coaching practice, while developing the reflective skills needed to navigate complex environments and build strong connections with athletes, peers, and governing bodies. By challenging dominant perspectives and engaging with alternative research approaches, students will gain a deeper, more holistic understanding of their role as practitioners - equipping them to become adaptable, thoughtful, and socially aware leaders in the field.

  • Research Investigation

    This module equips students with the expertise and hands-on experience to design and deliver high-quality research in the field of strength and conditioning. Working closely with a dedicated supervisor, students will take a research project from concept to completion - developing a proposal, securing ethical approval, collecting and analysing data, and producing a publication-ready academic article. It’s an essential opportunity to contribute to the field, build research confidence, and prepare for careers in academia or evidence-based professional practice.

  • Professional Practice

    In this hands-on module, students will gain real-world experience by assisting with the delivery of strength and conditioning programmes on a work-based placement provided by the University of Hull and its partner organisations. Collaborating with coaches and athletes, students will develop and implement training programmes while honing their coaching, programming, and interpersonal skills. Through critical reflection on their practice, they will deepen their understanding of their impact on both individuals and the wider performance environment, preparing them to become effective and adaptable strength and conditioning coaches.

  • Evolving Strength & Conditioning

    This forward-thinking module redefines traditional strength and conditioning by focusing on creating specialised programmes for individuals with long-term illnesses, chronic conditions, and injuries. Students will delve into the pathology of various conditions, the risks and challenges of exercise with clinical populations, and the key physical adaptations to exercise. They will also learn how S&C coaches can play an essential role in rehabilitation, reducing reliance on medical intervention. Key skills include assessment, monitoring, and recovery support, alongside fostering collaboration with clinical professionals to ensure effective, responsible practice.

Entry Requirements

What do I need?

When it comes to applying for this Postgraduate Taught degree, you'll need an Undergraduate degree (or equivalent). For this course, you'll need a 2:1 from a relevant bachelor's degree.

The programme is designed for graduates who have studied a subject that is relevant to this course.

If you’re an undergraduate student at Hull, you’re guaranteed a fast-track route to this postgraduate degree, as long as you meet the entry requirements.

In order to ensure our students have a rich learning and student experience, most of our programmes have a mix of domestic and international students. We reserve the right to close applications early to either group if application volumes suggest that this blend cannot be achieved.

Typical offer

2:1 in a relevant subject area

At Hull, we require a 2:1 in a related field for entry to the MSc Strength & Conditioning. We typically consider degrees in sports science, physiotherapy, sports coaching, sports rehabilitation or similar disciplines.

However, a 2:2 may be accepted if you have relevant experience and successfully complete an interview.
