Dr Misbau Lateef

Dr Misbau Alamu Lateef is a Lecturer in Law at the University of Hull School of Criminology, Politics, and Law, UK, where he teaches and leads modules across the undergraduate and postgraduate programmes, including Law of Business Organisations, UK and Transnational Commercial Law, and Trusts Law, amongst others. He joined Hull in January 2022, following a post-doctoral fellowship at the Columbia Center on Sustainable Investment, Columbia Climate School and Columbia Law School, Columbia University, New York, USA (2021–2022).

Dr Lateef holds a PhD and an M.Phil in Law from Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria, an LL.M from the University of Lagos, and an LL.B from OAU. He has been a Barrister and Solicitor of the Supreme Court of Nigeria since 2008, with extensive litigation and advisory experience across various courts in Nigeria. Before joining Hull, he taught for eight years at OAU, where his courses included company law, energy law, conflict of laws, equity and trusts, and Islamic law.

His research focuses on corporate law and governance, international trade and investment law, and sustainable finance, with current interests in ESG and the regulation of the digital economy. He is the author of Company Law in Nigeria and Business Organisations (Ibadan University Press, 2026; ISBN 978-978-121-177-5), the first comprehensive treatise on Nigerian company law under the Companies and Allied Matters Act 2020, and he has published scholarly articles and book chapters in leading journals and edited collections in his field.

Since joining Hull, Dr Lateef has been recognised as a Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (SFHEA, AdvanceHE UK), having progressed through Associate Fellowship (AFHEA) and Fellowship (FHEA), in recognition of his contributions to teaching and learning in higher education. His international experience includes a pre-doctoral visiting scholarship at Columbia Law School in 2018, together with attendance and presentation at international conferences.
