Dr Katerina Velentza

About Dr Katerina Velentza
Katerina is a maritime archaeologist and heritage professional, currently a Postdoctoral Research Associate in Environmental Humanities at the University of Hull. Katerina's research focuses on the interrelationships between archaeology, heritage, climate change and sustainability. She is the PI of the AHRC-IAA funded project ‘Community Waterscapes: Supporting community heritage to explore and shape Hull’s relationship with water’ and contributes with archaeological and heritage perspectives in the research, teaching and PhD supervision of the Energy and Environment Institute.
She is the author of several academic papers and books including the recent ‘The Future by the Sea: Engaging with Maritime Archaeological Research during the Climate Emergency’ co-edited with Dr Brandon Braun and published by Archaeopress.
Before coming to Hull, Katerina was a Kone Foundation Fellow at the University of Helsinki, in Finland, carrying out the project 'Re-imagining the use of traditional watercraft in the Aegean Sea for a sustainable environment and economy' with funding awarded by the Kone Foundation (Koneen Säätiö), and a Senior Researcher of Maritime Archaeology at the Estonian Maritime Museum.
She completed her PhD in Archaeology at the Centre of Maritime Archaeology of the University of Southampton (2020), her MA in Maritime Archaeology at the University of Southampton (2015-2016) and her BA in Classical Archaeology at King’s College London (2012-2015).
