Our friendly team provides advice on:

  • Budgeting and making your money go further
  • Financial support packages
  • Navigating changes in circumstances (e.g. illness, family issues, funding changes)
  • The student fees process

Care leavers, estranged students and carers

If you’re a care leaver, young adult carer, or estranged student under 25, you may be eligible for the Humber Grant – a support package offering up to £1,300 in cash and vouchers.

We’re proud to support care leavers through our commitment to the Care Leaver Covenant. We also stand with estranged students as Legacy Pledge members of the Stand Alone Pledge.

Disabled Students’ Allowances (DSAs) Reimbursement

If you have a disability, long-term health condition or mental health difficulty, you may be eligible for Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA) to help with extra study-related costs. You can apply for student finance and DSA at the same time.

What the DSA can get help with:

Non-medical support

such as specialist note-takers, British Sign Language (BSL) interpreters or study skills support for students with dyslexia

Specialist equipment

like assistive software, digital recorders, or a computer

Travel costs

if you need to travel to university in a different way due to your condition

Other study support

for example, printing extra copies of documents for proofreading

We also reimburse the £200 you need to pay towards any approved specialist equipment. DSAs are non-means tested and don’t need to be repaid. Our advisors are here to help with your application.

We’re here in the tough times

We know that things don’t always go to plan. If you’re facing financial difficulties, we’re here to listen and support you.

You may be eligible for help if you're experiencing challenging circumstances such as homelessness, a relationship breakdown, family bereavement or delays to your funding.

Depending on your situation, support could include help towards living costs, travel, or essential costs like food.

In some cases, additional support from donated funds may also be available.

Impartial advice and guidance on all hardship measures, is available from our financial wellbeing specialists.

Scholarships and bursaries

We offer a range of scholarships and bursaries that don’t need to be repaid. These include academic awards and support for specific circumstances. See what you could be eligible for.

FAQs

You can apply for full support if you’re a UK national or have settled status (no restrictions on how long you can stay); you normally live in England; or you’ve been living in the UK, the Channel Islands or the Isle of Man for 3 years before the first day of the first academic year of your course

EU students with pre-settled status can apply for a Tuition Fee Loan only at first. But when you gain settled status (usually after 5 years of living in the UK), you can also apply for a Maintenance Loan. There are some other students who can apply for full student finance too, including students with Refugee or Humanitarian Protection status (but not asylum seekers), students who are in the UK via the Afghan or Ukraine visa concessions, and migrant workers.
