Skills Team appointments

You can use this page to book an online or on-campus appointment with the Skills Team. Our appointments are 30 minutes long, and we can focus on academic skills, writing, information search skills, ICT and/or digital literacy. Please take care to select the right appointment type as this will ensure you are matched with the right member of staff.

If you need an appointment outside normal working hours, please use the 'Request an appointment' link at the bottom of this page and we will see if one of our team could be available.

Note that your appointment is considered a private conversation and not disclosed with university staff outside the Skills Team without your consent.

Please select your mode of appointment:

Book an online appointment

Online Skills Team appointments are run online via Microsoft Teams. Microsoft Teams allows us both to share audio/video, share screens, text-chat and share work.

When you book an appointment, you will receive a further email with instructions on how to connect your PC or mobile device. This will include a link (URL) that you will need to follow at the time of your appointment.

We want to make sure our appointment service is fully inclusive so are happy for you to record an appointment if you feel this will help with your learning or simply if you feel you may need to look back at the advice at a later time. Please just ask before starting to record.

Book an on-campus appointment

On campus appointments are held in the Brynmor Jones Library at the University of Hull campus. When you book an appointment, you will receive a further email with directions to the room. Only attend your appointment if you are well.

We want to make sure our appointment service is fully inclusive so are happy for you to audio-record an appointment using your phone if you feel this will help with your learning or simply if you feel you may need to listen back to the advice at a later time. Please just ask before starting to record.

We ask that you do not bring children to your appointment, however we understand that sometimes it is dificult to arrange care. In those cases we are happy to hold your appointment in our Family Room on the ground floor of the Library. Please notify us as early as possible.

Frequently asked questions:

Skills Adviser Appointment

Appointment format

Appointments are delivered on-campus or online via Microsoft Teams. Take care to select the right option above. Appointments are 30 minutes long and we can see you individually, in pairs or small groups. Please arrive or connect promptly and bring along the work you need help with.

What to expect from an appointment

Advisers provide help for specific academic study queries and will provide advice on how to become more independent in your learning. Our advisers will therefore try to help you with your query and give you advice on what you can do next to improve your academic study skills.

What NOT to expect from an appointment

We cannot proofread your work for you but will provide tips and guidance on how to proofread your own work. Proofreading and editing is a skill you need to develop to become an independent learner so repeated requests to review similar work will be discouraged. We want to help you help yourself so please avoid booking repeat appointments out of habit.

This is not an English for Academic Purposes or English as a Foreign Language service. International students can access the MyEnglish International service for help and support with this.

If you can't find a appointment time you can make, or if you are a distance student with unreliable connectivity, you can request an online, telephone, email or on-campus appointment here.
