University of Hull students

The Neurodivergent Team is made up of qualified and experienced teachers and advisors. You are invited to tell us about your neurodivergence through a student support questionnaire so we can learn more about your needs.

Disclosing a neurodivergent condition will not affect your chances of receiving an offer. If you have not disclosed a neurodivergent condition on your application, you can still tell us at any point in your studies.

What we offer

  • Advice about support once we have received a Student Support Questionnaire (SSQ)
  • Screening for Dyslexia and guidance about other screening and assessment processes
  • Advice and guidance about reasonable adjustment in teaching and learning and for exams
  • Designated virtual learning site with study resources (Canvas)
  • A neurodivergent support community and peer support groups
  • Support for transition into higher education for autistic students
  • Advice on applications for Disabled Students' Allowances (DSA) or other funded support
  • DSA funded specialist one to one study skills support (SpLD)

Information for DSA assessors

Non-medical helper rates

The University of Hull provides specialist 1:1 study skills support for SpLD at a cost of £65.65 per hour.

We do not provide non-medical helper specialist 1:1 study skill support for Autism (ASC) or Non-medical helper mentor support. Non-medical helper support is funded by Disabled Students’ Allowance (DSA).

Neurodivergent students: Preparing for study at the University of Hull

The student support questionnaire provides the opportunity for you to tell us about any previous support you have had and what you might need in higher education. You can upload evidence of your neurodivergent condition in this questionnaire.

Typical examples of evidence include:

  • Clinical Psychologist Report/letter (e.g. Autism/ADHD)
  • Educational Psychologist Report (e.g. Dyslexia)
  • Occupational Therapy Report (e.g. Dyspraxia)
  • Clinical Reports (ADHD)
  • Initial Screening Reports
  • Exam Arrangement Form (Form 8)
  • Evidence of a place on an NHS waiting list for ADHD/Autism (ASC)

You can apply for DSA once applications for funding through Student Finance have opened regardless of which University your final place will be at. UCAS has information about the process and the Hubble Centre can provide further advice on this process.

Organising a diagnostic assessment for SpLDs

You may need an updated or new diagnostic report for SpLD in order to access DSA funded support. We can help you obtain a new and suitable diagnostic assessment before you start your course. We will refund the cost of your new report. You must use our preferred assessor, ToHealth, stating that you intend to study at the University of Hull. You can contact ToHealth by clicking on this link.

Please keep your receipt safe to arrange a refund (up to the maximum of £294 outside London, and £300 inside London). Refunds will be processed at the end of October. Once you have completed enrollment, we will advise you on how to claim back your expenses.

ToHealth does not provide assessments for a clinical diagnosis of ADHD or Autism (ASC). If you require a clinical diagnosis of ADHD or Autism (ASC) please contact your GP.

Your exam experience: using assistive software

We know exams can be particularly challenging for neurodivergent students. Read & Write software is available to use in exams. Read & Write software is a text reader that reads text aloud and allows you to tint your screen. In certain circumstances human support may be provided.

What if I think I might have a SpLD but have never been formally assessed?

Free online Dyslexia screening is available for all applicants and students. This can be accessed through the online induction or requested by you as part of your student support questionnaire.

If screening results indicate Dyslexia, we may arrange a diagnostic assessment with a suitable qualified assessor (paid for by the University of Hull)

We do not screen or assess for ADHD or Autism. Please contact your GP if you require a clinical diagnosis.
