About this course

Our MSc Accounting and Finance programme is designed specifically to help you develop an understanding of accounting and finance in global organisations. It will provide you with important training for careers in the accounting and financial sectors.

You’ll develop key professional and research skills, as well as an understanding of ethical business practice throughout your year-long course. The modules will cover the foundations of finance, the financial market and public sector finance and taxation. You’ll then undertake a final research project, which can be either a dissertation or a business-based project.

You’ll be studying on campus at the internationally renowned Hull University Business School, with access to a full range of professional business information services including Reuters Datastream, Reuters Thomson One, Bloomberg, Bankscope, and FAME to enhance your data exploration.

Choose your modules

For a full Masters degree, you'll study 180 credits over the duration of your course. Some programmes offer a Postgraduate Diploma (PGDip) qualification or a Postgraduate Certificate (PGCert) qualification. For a PGDip, you'll study 120 credits, and for a PGCert, you'll study 60 credits.

Issues in Accounting and Accountability

Develop your knowledge of issues in accounting and accountability in the context of corporations and understand the expectations of societies from today’s corporations. You'll explore issues relating to accounting, governance, accountability, audit, corporate social responsibility, and regulation with an emphasis on theory, practice and regulation. This module provides a theoretical background to anyone wishing to enter the accounting world whether as an accountant, auditor, or researcher.

Foundations of Finance

This module offers an understanding of key financial theories and practices: their strengths and weaknesses, and their usefulness in financial decision making. Key topics include financial performance analysis; risk and return; capital budgeting and management; and the time value of money.

Financial Markets

This module aims to give you an understanding of the principles of modern financial markets and instruments. You'll learn to apply these concepts by following and interpreting current affairs in the financial markets.

Corporate Financial Management

This module introduces you to the theory and practice of corporate finance, focusing on the effects of investment and financing decisions on firm value. You'll also develop an understanding of corporate financial management policies.

Accounting, Organisations and Control

Develop your understanding of organisational accounting and control processes and their impacts on businesses, governments and society. You'll study performance evaluations as well as management control and accounting systems and techniques, including their changes, issues and economic contexts.

Public Sector Finance, Taxation and Accounting

This module provides you with a global perspective on the economics of taxation, how different countries manage their taxation systems and the impact this has on a nation's finances. It also considers issues such as governance, accountability and cultural perspectives within public sector management. You will also be introduced to the principles of taxation.

Dissertation (MSc Business)

This Dissertation gives you the chance to tailor your research project according to your interests gained throughout the taught element of your MSc programme. The dissertation is the pinnacle of the MSc course and allows you to build upon your knowledge gained in the previous taught modules, by carrying out research based on real-world business challenges that will prepare you for the complexities of entering the job market.

The programme is designed for graduates from any discipline with a strong interest in the foundations of accounting and finance. However, we do recommend that you have a basic knowledge and understanding of this area of business studies.

If you’re an undergraduate student at Hull, you’re guaranteed a fast-track route to this postgraduate degree, as long as you meet the entry requirements.

In order to ensure our students have a rich learning and student experience, most of our programmes have a mix of domestic and international students. We reserve the right to close applications early to either group if application volumes suggest that this blend cannot be achieved.

If you require a student visa to study or if your first language is not English you will be required to provide acceptable evidence of your English language proficiency level.

This course requires academic IELTS 6.5 overall, with no less than 5.5 in each skill. See other English language proficiency qualifications accepted by the University of Hull.
