About Professor Jiawei Mi

Jiawei Mi is the academic lead for the Advanced Materials and Manufacturing research theme in the School of Engineering and Computer Science.

His expertise is on the design and development of advanced metallic alloys, composites and the related novel solidification, spray deposition and thermomechanical processing technologies.

Previously, he worked at Beijing Institute of Aeronautical Materials, Beijing, China (1986-1998), the Interdisciplinary Research Centre, University of Birmingham (1999-2002), and the Department of Materials, University of Oxford (2002-2010).

Over the past 30 years, he has won and jointly won 30 research grants worth a total of ~�10 million in funding.

  • Since 2010, wrote 25 successful proposals and won 115 days of Synchrotron X-ray and neutron beam times from the national laboratories in the UK (Diamond Light Source and ISIS - the pulsed neutron and muon source at the Rutherford Appleton Laboratory, UK), the USA (Advanced Photon Source, Argonne National Laboratory, Chicago, USA), Switzerland (Swiss Light Source and Spallation Neutron Source at The Paul Scherrer Institute, Switzerland) and European Synchrotron Radiation Facility (ESRF)
  • Published 120 scientific papers, wrote and edited the technical book, Solidification Processing of Metallic Alloys under External Fields
  • Awarded a Royal Society Industry Fellowship in 2012-2016
