"Ever since I was a little kid I have wanted to be scientist my confidence was not very high. Brazil - Jéssica Gonçalves Vieira da Cruz

"It’s thanks to the Brazilian government’s Science Without Borders programme that I have been able to have this amazing opportunity to study at the University of Hull. The programme has been an amazing experience for me. I’ve learnt a huge amount just by being in a country that is so different from my home in Brazil.

"This experience, apart from what most people think, is not only about academic development but is also about personal growth. Through getting to know new people from all around the world, learning about new cultures and using a different language, I’m growing as a person on a daily basis. It’s in this new environment, with its new challenges, that I’ve learnt the most and it’s why studying abroad has already been hugely beneficial for me.

"I have found it difficult to be apart from my family, my home, and my familiar environment, but I’ve also managed to create a new family of good friends here in Hull. I have now adapted to my new life in England and I have found that advice and help from others has helped me settle in.

"Ever since I was a little kid I have wanted to be scientist but when I started university my confidence was not very high. However, since being accepted onto the Science Without Borders programme my self-belief has grown hugely and I now feel that I am capable of achieving whatever I want - I just need to focus and work hard for it.

"I’m learning things now that I want to put into practice when I become a researcher and a teacher. I’m also learning a lot of things about myself that I did not know until I got here, and I would probably otherwise never have known. I now know that I am strong, brave and able to achieve my dreams. When I leave England it will be with a new perspective, a lot of knowledge, hope and energy to work back home in Brazil."
