Study Geography, Earth and Environmental Science at Hull

The world needs geographers, environmentalists and earth scientists to manage the environmental issues we face. Our degrees will help you develop a deep understanding of the major challenges facing people and the planet, and give you hands-on experience on field trips to the UK and abroad.

Want to make a positive difference to the world?

So do we. From climate change to clean water, geohazards to green energy: sustainability is at the core of our degrees. We’ll empower you to join us in helping to build a fairer, sustainable, carbon neutral future.

You’ll learn from experts who are at the forefront of research in their field, with solid connections to policy makers and industries that can drive real change. As we speak, they’re out studying the latest solutions, and they bring all this knowledge back to you through research-led teaching.

And you’ll apply your knowledge to the real world through practical work, including field trips to places like Barcelona, Iceland and Scotland. So by the time you graduate, you’ll be ready to tackle some of Earth’s biggest challenges.

Real places. Real people. Real experience.

You'll spend much of your time 'learning by doing'. Whether that's analysing samples in the lab, developing digital skills such as in Geographical Information Systems (GIS), or on field trips to places of interest in the UK and overseas.

Recent fieldwork destinations include Almeria, Barcelona, Berlin, Brazil, Egypt, Hong Kong, Iceland, Italy, Malawi, Mallorca, Morocco, Scotland, and the Yorkshire Dales.3

“We get to do a whole module on Barcelona. What other course lets you study a place in such depth?”

Today, Hull. Tomorrow, the world.

You’ll gain a range of field and lab skills, along with valuable careers advice and guidance. You'll also have opportunities to take part in work experience as part of a third year module or during a placement year. That’ll make you an excellent candidate for organisations like the Environment Agency, the renewable energy sector, conservation teams, local councils or wildlife trusts.

You’ll be qualified to pursue geological careers in environmental consulting, remediation, renewable energies, exploration geology, surveying and engineering. With a wide range of transferable skills at your disposal, you'll be well on the way to making a real difference to the world.

Great outdoors, great indoors

When you’re not out on field trips, you’ll have access to excellent facilities right here on campus. Here you can test, analyse, research, experiment, and work on your final-year dissertation. It’s all part of our ‘learning by doing’ approach.
