Why is the degree three years?
Training as a nurse requires the development of strong clinical, practical, and professional skills. A three-year programme gives you enough time to progress safely and confidently through:
- Academic study in anatomy, physiology, pharmacology, and patient care
- Clinical skills labs and simulation work
- Placements across hospital, community, and specialist settings
- Structured development from supported learner to independent practitioner
This three-year structure meets the standards required for Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) registration.
What’s different about the programme at Hull?
Hull’s nursing degree is the standard three years. But the trimester model offers several advantages:
1. Three trimesters = more consistent learning
We space teaching more evenly across the year, helping you to:
- Learn in manageable blocks
- Maintain momentum in both theory and practice
- Avoid long gaps between placement experiences
2. More placement opportunities
The trimester structure provides:
- Extra clinical placement time
- More varied settings, such as acute wards, community nursing, GP practices, and specialist units
- Stronger preparation for real-world nursing and multidisciplinary teamwork
3. Steady build-up of clinical confidence
With regular cycles of theory and practice, you develop core competencies continuously. Helping you feel workplace-ready as soon as you graduate.
