We use a range of real-world assessment methods – not just exams. That way, you gain the practical skills and experience you need for whatever career you aspire to.
You'll research and question the law in its social, moral and political contexts, and study specialities such as environmental law, new technologies, criminal justice, international law, commercial law, and family law.
Our Real-World Law module offers a range of pro bono legal opportunities in your second year to put what you've learned into practice. Here, you'll develop your knowledge and experience with law professionals in the workplace and lay the foundations for working with subject experts on a final-year research project of your choice.
Further opportunities to bring your law skills to life include mock trials, Student Law Society mooting and client interviewing competitions. You can also build experience with mini-pupillages at Wilberforce Chambers and internships with local law firms and government. Or work with legal professionals in our Legal Advice Centre.
You could study abroad at one of our highly ranked partner institutions. You’ll have the chance to meet leading names from the world of law at our Annual Law Convention. We also run a Careers in Criminal Justice fair annually, where you’ll have the chance to network with regional and national employers.
You’re guaranteed a place at the University of Law2, which prepares students for the Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE). And we’ve also partnered with the University of Law to deliver the series of Solicitors Qualifying Exam (SQE) postgraduate courses on campus at Hull, for those who want to go on to professional practice.

Year abroad
Study Abroad programmes take place over a full academic year. This extends a standard undergraduate degree from three to four years, with study abroad taking place in year three. Once you've completed your study abroad year, you'll return to complete the final year of your degree at the University of Hull.
There are many reasons to undertake a study abroad year. For one, you’ll make unforgettable memories with a whole range of countries to choose from. But more than that, you’ll boost your confidence and your contacts. And you’ll gain skills that will make employers take notice of you: curiosity, sociability, adaptability, and intercultural awareness.

This module provides you with a basic introduction to law and the key skills for studying it. In particular, you'll develop your ability in academic writing, problem solving and research.

Develop your understanding of law as a fundamental social institution. You'll reflect on your understanding of justice, with reference to contemporary social issues.

Develop a strong understanding of criminal law in England and Wales. You'll focus on topics like property offences, non-fatal offences against the person, defences and inchoate offences.

In this module you'll study the law governing the UK state, the institution of the European Union and the nature of the legal relationship between the UK and the EU.

Obligations I – The Law of Tort
Study the general framework and key concepts of the law of tort. Among other things, you'll consider the grounds of liability and evaluate the role of tort law in modern society.

Examine contract formation and enforceability, factors that may render a contract void, the interpretation of contractual terms and potential remedies for breach of contract.

Real-World Law
Developed in partnership with a leading commercial law firm, and taught by practising solicitors, arbitrators, mediators and advocates, you will focus on understanding law in a commercial setting through interactive workshops, finding solutions to legal issues using a range of practical skills.

Trusts: Managing for Others
This module will introduce you to the legal concept of the trust and help to develop an understanding of the role the device plays in facilitating and regulating the management of wealth for others.

Dr Caroline Gibby
Reader and Head of Law
Caroline gained a Law Degree from the University of Liverpool, going on to qualify as a Solicitor in 1990, moving on to different roles with the firms where she worked. Caroline joined the University of Hull as Reader and Head of Law in 2022.
Dr Phil Bielby
Lecturer in Law
Phil's research and teaching focus on questions of ethics, human rights and social justice in mental health theory, policy and law, and public mental health ethics.

How much is it?
For UK students, our standard course fee is £9,535 per year. Keep in mind that some courses are longer - for example, spending your third year abroad will make your degree four years in total.
If you choose to study a foundation year as part of your course, the fee is £5,760.
