About this course

Gain a thorough grounding in economics as part of a degree with real-world relevance at its core.

Topics include digitisation and technological change, social inequality, climate change, financial crises, growth, and the effects of pandemics like COVID-19. You’ll learn how sophisticated tools are used to apply economic theory to these global issues.

We also have links with major international businesses so you can get real industry experience on placement with the likes of Siemens Gamesa, Verition Fund Management LLC, Cranswick and GE Aerospace, or spend a year with the Government Economic Service or the Office for National Statistics.

In your final year, you’ll also have the chance to take an internship (that’s in addition to the extra option of studying abroad or spending a year on placement in industry). It’s an amazing opportunity to apply your knowledge in a real working environment – and enhance your employability at the same time.

This degree shares a common first year with our BA Business Economics programme so you can choose to switch direction in the second year if you develop a particular area of interest.

Together, we can make the world add up

Year abroad

Study Abroad programmes take place over a full academic year. This extends a standard undergraduate degree from three to four years, with study abroad taking place in year three. Once you've completed your study abroad year, you'll return to complete the final year of your degree at the University of Hull.

There are many reasons to undertake a study abroad year. For one, you’ll make unforgettable memories with a whole range of countries to choose from. But more than that, you’ll boost your confidence and your contacts. And you’ll gain skills that will make employers take notice of you: curiosity, sociability, adaptability, and intercultural awareness.

Module options

Each year, you’ll study modules worth a certain number of credits, and you need 120 credits per year. Most modules are 20 credits – so you’ll study six modules each year. Some longer modules, such as a dissertation, are worth more. In these cases, you’ll study fewer modules - but the number of credits will always add up to 120. Some modules are compulsory, some are optional, so you can build a course that’s right for you.
