About Tom Cullen
Dr Tom Cullen is a Senior Lecturer in High Performance Physiology, joining the School of Sport, Exercise, and Rehabilitation Sciences in 2026.
He is an applied physiologist with research interests in sports performance and health. His PhD focussed on understanding the biochemical processes that underpin beneficial and negative adaptation to exercise in elite athletes. His research has since expanded to study a range of factors such as environmental stress and poor sleep in the context of human performance and health.
A recent focus of his work has been studying how heating and cooling therapies can be complimentary to exercise training for sports performance and health.
Alongside his academic work, Tom has worked with a range of professional sports teams and elite athletes, providing sports science support in physiology, and strength and conditioning.
