Alternative Route into Health and Social Care

About the course


This course, at Level 4 for 60 Credits, offers an opportunity for those looking to change their career and/or don’t quite meet the entry requirements for our professional health and social care degree programmes.

Delivered through online evening taught classes (Tuesday, 6–9 pm) via our dedicated online learning platform, this programme is an easily accessible and vocationally relevant introduction to academic study.

It is aimed at those who would like to pursue careers as nurses, midwives, operating department practitioners, paramedics or social workers*, but who currently do not have the academic qualifications to apply directly for our healthcare degrees.

GCSE English Language and Maths Grade 4 or C or Functional Skills Level 2 in English and Maths or equivalent are required for those wishing to progress on to BA Social Work.

This is an online course held in the evening. For UK residents aged 18 or over.



Study


This fully online part-time evening programme is designed for people looking to progress onto professional programmes. You can remain in your job while studying. The course will also improve your knowledge, skills and employability, and help you to decide if further study is for you.

If you intend to continue your Health professional studies at a different University after this course, you should contact them to ensure that they accept this qualification.

  • Dementia – Responding Positively

Students are assessed through a variety of methods including written assignments, portfolios of evidence, examinations and presentations.

Entry requirements


There are no formal entry requirements. Applicants must be aged 18 and over.

You must have access to a computer with internet connectivity to study on the programme.

As this course is an approved entry route for our health degrees including BSc Nursing (Adult, Child, Mental Health, Learning Disability), BSc Midwifery, BSc Paramedic Science, BSc Operating Department Practice and BA Social Work, all students who go on to apply for any of these programmes will be required to obtain a satisfactory DBS check prior to enrolment. Careers


This course is an approved entry route for our health degrees including BSc Nursing (Adult, Child, Mental Health, or Learning Disability), BSc Midwifery, BSc Paramedic Science, BSc Operating Department Practice and BA Social Work*. Students are required to make a full UCAS application for these programmes. All places are subject to the normal requirements for an acceptable personal statement, references, successful interview, medical and DBS.

University Certificate into Health and Social Care

For those who want to study while they work, there is a part-time course delivered through bite-sized modules. The University Certificate into Health and Social Care has three intakes a year – September, January and May.

Fees


The cost of the course is £4,625. Applicants may be eligible for self-financing through a Student Loan from Student Finance England (conditions apply). Further details are available on application.
