University of Hull history shapes Hull KR's future

We're proud our history is still shaping the future. And proud to stand alongside Hull KR in celebrating a University of Hull pioneer who forever changed the way we see the world - and the world we see.

Five decades ago, George Gray led the University of Hull research team that made flat-screen TV’s, smartphones and so many other devices possible.

They played a significant role in pioneering liquid crystal technology with the discovery of stable cyanobiphenyl liquid crystals in the early 1970s.

Their breakthrough was crucial for the development of liquid crystal displays (LCDs) used in modern flat-screen TVs, smartphones, and other electronic devices, laying the foundation for a multibillion-dollar industry.

Now, five decades later, George Gray is changing the way the world sees Hull KR.

Ahead of the 2026 season, Hull KR is celebrating Professor Gray’s legacy with their new players and coaches training ranges.

The range takes its pattern design inspiration from the billions of screens sold around the world and will be unveiled on the evening of Wednesday 8 October online and will be available in-store from Thursday 9 October.

Our partnership with Hull KR runs deeper than the University's logo sitting proudly on the club's jerseys, and we're excited to see the club recognise Professor Gray in 2026.

Our students and graduates work with the 2025 Challenge Cup and League Title winners on placement and employment opportunities, getting hands-on experience with the Hull KR first team and full player pathways as well as access to the club's leaders who share their experiences in live scenarios and workshops at the University.
