Same Pathway, Different Journeys: Your gift means twice as much to our students
A generous donor has challenged alumni to help raise funds and increase opportunities for University of Hull students.
The Student Success Fund helps students to access life-changing opportunities and navigate challenging circumstances so that financial constraints don’t stop talented students from achieving their goals.
Donor Hilary Layton has generously offered to match donations from alumni to the Student Success Fund up to a total of £5,000 to help students broaden their horizons and take advantage of transformative opportunities that might previously have been out of reach. That’s why we’ve launched the Same Pathway, Different Journeys appeal and are asking alumni to help us make the most of this generous offer.
Hilary Layton said: “If students have never had the opportunity to gain work experience, new skills, or study abroad, they can do so with support from alumni like us. We should remove as many barriers as we can, including financial ones."
Every one of our journeys has been unique, but the shared foundation of our educational experiences at Hull helped so many of us take the first steps on the road to success.
The world is waiting for the next generation of our students, and we want to help them take advantage of the opportunities that come their way. There’s never been a better time to help our students on the path to success., With Hilary pledging to match donations up to a total of £5,000, your gift will make twice the impact.
This is the difference our Student Success Fund makes.

Student Success Fund
For many of our students, the Student Success Fund is the gateway to a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. We all know that an internship, the opportunity to participate in sporting activities, or the chance to take advantage of an opportunity overseas might require a financial commitment that is beyond some households. We don’t think talented students should have to forgo those opportunities just because of financial constraints, and we’ve seen the real difference donor support can make in a student journey.
Rugby player Leon, whose Sports Participation Grant was made possible through the Student Success Fund said: “Without the Sports Participation Grant I wouldn’t have played for England and England has opened a lot of doors I probably couldn’t have opened myself.”
Jessica, a Student Volunteer, said: “Volunteering for the Eden Project has given me lots of transferrable skills. I handle stakeholder engagement, communications for student outreach and am fortunate to have been part of the project management and project planning for the volunteer group, which sets me in really good stead for the future."
Hilary Layton said: “When you're a student, it's an ideal time to take on new challenges outside your study, or to enhance your study with additional opportunities. I've seen the transformative effect of these opportunities.”
You can help us to support more students to make a difference through volunteering, career opportunities, sports, and international study by supporting our Student Success Fund.
