Coast-R Webinar | Crafting the Shore and the SMMR Programme

This event took place on Tuesday 15 July 2025 and has now ended.
Introducing the third session in the Coast-R Network Webinars Series: ‘Crafting the Shore’ and ‘The Sustainable Management of UK Marine Resources Programme’
We look forward to welcoming:
- Dr Suzana Ilic & Dr Serena Pollastri of Lancaster University: ‘Crafting the shore – co-producing natural structures for saltmarsh regeneration’
- Professor David Paterson, Co-Champion of the SMMR Programme, of the University of St Andrews: a short introduction to the aims and outputs of the Sustainable Management of UK Marine Resources (SMMR) Programme
About the speakers
Dr Suzana Ilic is Senior Lecturer in the Lancaster Environment Centre at Lancaster University. Her research interest is in understanding coastal hydrodynamics, sediment transport and the resulting morphological changes; and in developing tools for coastal managers and consultants that can be used to predict of future changes.
Dr Serena Pollastri is a Lecturer in Urban Futures at Lancaster University. Her research focusses primarily on coastal environments, particularly intertidal and estuarine areas. She employs a Research Through Design approach to work with interdisciplinary teams and multiple partners to explore ways to understand, monitor and design participatory nature-based interventions for coastal adaptation.
Professor David Paterson is Executive Director of Marine Alliance for Science & Technology Scotland (MASTS) and Professor in the School of Biology at the University of St Andrews. His research concerns the ecology and dynamics of marine systems with a strong focus on the 'biodiversity-ecosystem function' debate and the dynamics of marine microbiota.
About Professor Stuart McLelland
The webinar will be chaired by the Coast-R Network’s Professor Stuart McLelland.
Stuart is Deputy Director of the Energy and Environment Institute at the University of Hull and Professor of Water Science. He conducts research focused on the experimental modelling of rivers and coasts, and particularly to understand how climate change impacts on these environments.
About the the Coast-R Network
The Coast-R Network is led by the University of Hull, in partnership with the University of Glasgow (our event hosts), Aberystwyth University, the University of Leeds, the University of Liverpool and Southampton University.
The Network brings together academics, UK marine, coastal and government agencies, industry partners, local authorities, the voluntary sector and communities most affected by coastal change. It's an inclusive and collaborative community of practice working to build knowledge, action and resilience for UK coastal communities and seas.
