Making the Most of the Festive Season at University

It’s 8am, and it’s minus one degree. The sky is still dark, and you’re bracing yourself for a long day ahead with a few looming assignments. By the time you walk back from university at 5pm, it looks like midnight! The festive period at university can be tough with shorter days, winter blues, and academic pressures. However, this time of year can also be magical if you learn to romanticise the little moments. From twinkling lights to cosy evenings with friends, there’s so much to embrace. As we build up to the festive season, I’m here to share some tips to help you stay balanced, feel prepared, and make this time of year a little brighter!
Balancing Festivities with Studying
As the festive season approaches, assignments seem to pile up out of nowhere, and getting out of bed for that 9am lecture feels like a monumental task. With exams looming and society events in full swing, it’s easy to feel overwhelmed if things aren’t in balance.
The key is planning ahead. Use a schedule or calendar to map out your deadlines, events, and study time. It’s a lifesaver when everything starts to blur together. Don’t forget to factor in some breaks as stepping away from your work can help you recharge and refocus. You could try treating yourself to a day trip! A visit to York Christmas markets or a stroll through Beverley can bring some festive cheer to a busy week.
Most importantly, prioritise what really matters. Decide what tasks or events are must-dos and which can wait. If you’re feeling stretched, don’t hesitate to leave some space in your calendar to rest and reset. Oh, and get outside! Moving your body for just 30 minutes a day can make such a difference. You don’t need to go to the gym if that’s not your thing! Why not try going for a walk with a friend, joining a local exercise class, or even doing one at home? Finding the right balance means you can enjoy the festivities without sacrificing your studies or your sanity!

Preparing to Go Home
Winter break is just around the corner, so it’s a good idea to get organised now. Start by booking your tickets early to save money and avoid any last-minute stress. Think about what you’ll need to pack and bring home anything you won’t need, as well as any gifts for friends or family.
If you’re staying in Hull over the holidays don’t worry! You can still make the season special. Plan festive activities like visiting Christmas markets, exploring cosy cafés, or having a quiet movie night in. A quieter campus can be a great opportunity to relax and recharge.
No matter where you’re spending the season, make time for the people you care about. Arrange meetups with friends you haven’t seen in a while or catch up virtually if you can’t meet in person. The holidays are about celebrating in your own way, so start planning to make the most of it!
Those are my tips for making the most of the festive period at university! With a little planning and effort, it’s easier to romanticise this time of year. Remember to keep a healthy balance, avoid burning out, and look for joy in the small moments that make this season special.
Whether it’s celebrating with flatmates, exploring festive events, or simply curling up with a hot chocolate, there’s so much to embrace. Before you know it, winter break will be here, so enjoy the lead-up and make it count!
