BSc Biomedical Science

Hi, I’m Pari and I’m currently in my second year studying Biomedical Science!

I’ve always known that I wanted to pursue a medical degree, but choosing the right university felt overwhelming at first. With so many options across the country, I wasn’t sure where I’d find the perfect fit. That all changed when I discovered Hull.

Before starting my research, I didn’t know much about the city, but the more I learned, the more I realised Hull was exactly what I’d been searching for. Hull felt like a haven, a place where I could feel at home while pursuing a degree of interest. The locals are incredibly friendly, and there’s always something exciting happening. The city’s inclusivity and welcoming atmosphere always made me feel like I truly belonged.

Beyond the people, Hull’s beauty, its rich history and stunning architecture captivated me. It’s a city that feels like a warm hug, where every corner invites you in. At Hull, you’re not just studying, you’re part of something bigger and it feels like home.

1. Writing my personal statement

I was quite fortunate in that I had lots of experiences and skills that I could include in my personal statement. I was also lucky to receive a great level of support from my mentors, both at school and beyond. I’m aware that not everyone has this kind of support, and that can make writing your personal statement even harder.

That said, I still struggled. Getting started is the hardest part, but my advice would be to just write. Write anything. My first draft might have been my worst writing ever, but once I had something down on paper (or in this case, my laptop), I had a foundation to build on and improve.

Gather all the information you want to include and start writing and if you can, get support! Teachers and staff at your school are usually more than willing to help guide you. If that’s not an option, there are plenty of online resources and companies where you can find a mentor or tutor to assist you.

One last piece of advice: everyone will have different opinions on your personal statement, so don’t ask too many people. Remember, the personal statement is just that—personal to you. Take others' advice on board, but only write what feels authentic to you.

2. Attending Open Days

Open days are amazing because they give you the chance to experience what it’s like to be a student on campus and in the city. Make the most of your open days—ask questions, look around, and explore. Start imagining what life would be like at Hull, and I can tell you, it’s pretty great!

It’s important that the university feels right for you. As someone who attended an open day not too long ago and now works at them, I can honestly say they are the best opportunity you’ll have to see if the university is a good fit. Plus, it’s a fun chance to visit a new place!

3. Sending off my application

Sending off my application was both a relief and slightly nerve-wracking but at least now it was out there, and there was nothing more I could do. The anxious waiting period had begun, and I had to see what would come of my application. Either way, I knew that everything happens for a reason, and I’d be fine (spoiler alert - I was!).

4. Hearing back from my choices

Finally receiving replies after weeks or even months of waiting is such a relief. During that waiting period, I suggest keeping yourself busy and distracted. As tempting as it may be, don’t keep refreshing your emails for that UCAS notification! Regardless of the offers you receive (or don’t receive), it’s important to focus on getting good grades, so channel your energy into studying.

Looking after your mental health is also incredibly important during this time. Make sure you take breaks and do things you enjoy to make the waiting period less stressful. You’ve got this!

Hull was the first university to offer me a place, which was such a relief. It felt amazing to know I had a solid offer on the table, and I definitely celebrated knowing that all my hard work had paid off!

Finding out that I was officially going to Hull was so exciting. I immediately started planning my life there, and when I found out on results day, while at Disneyland Paris, I think I screamed a bit too loud and scared a few kids! It’s one of the best things that’s ever happened to me, and I’m so grateful I chose Hull to be my home.

My journey to Hull has been an interesting one. While the application process and exams were stressful at times, it was all worth it in the end. I’ve had an amazing experience at Hull so far. My course strikes the perfect balance between being challenging and fascinating, and I’ve had the pleasure of learning from some truly great lecturers.

Beyond academics, I’ve had the opportunity to join some fantastic societies and even start my own! I’ve made lifelong friends and built memories that I’ll always cherish. Most of all, I’ve fallen in love with Hull. It’s the right place for me at this point in my life, and I’m so happy to be somewhere that truly feels like home.

For anyone going through the application process right now, remember to stay positive. It might feel overwhelming at times, but trust me, it’s all worth it in the end. I hope you find your place, and if Hull is part of your journey, I’m sure you’ll love it just as much as I do
