About

Our mission, vision and values

Our mission, vision and values guide everything we do. They’re the golden threads that run through our education, research, knowledge exchange and civic engagement. As well as the culture, policies and working practices of our University community.

Together on the frontier of humanity's future

Shaped by a century-old engagement with society, the University of Hull is the intellectual epicentre of a one-of-a-kind region. A region that keeps evolving – and now a proving ground for answers to many of the big challenges facing our country and the world.

Through hands-on collaboration, we examine the defining issues of our time. From renewable energy and flood resilience, to wound care and mental health, to knife crime and modern slavery. Creating new thinking and launching new endeavours to change individual lives and humanity’s shared future.

Our mission

An exceptional education for the many

Our mission, as enshrined in our Royal Charter, is to:

“…advance education, scholarship, knowledge and understanding by teaching and research, for the benefit of individuals and society at large.”

We believe who you are or where you’re from shouldn’t decide how far you can go. At Hull, it’s more about what you know than who you know. And everyone is empowered to achieve in their own way.

As one of England’s oldest universities, we have a proud heritage of academic excellence, and a history of creating and inspiring life-changing research. We'll build on this heritage to fulfil our strategy.

Our vision

Shaping a fairer, brighter, better future for all

The world has come a long way, but injustices still survive. Think of the inhumanity of modern slavery. The inequality in health outcomes. The unignorable threat of climate change. Motivated by these challenges and inspired by the power of our global community, we’re sharing a fairer, brighter, better future.

Founded in 1927 as a ‘centre of light and culture’, the University has been leading in growing Hull for nearly 100 years. Contributing to education, research and knowledge exchange, as well as the social, economic and cultural fabric of our region. We’ll continue this work into the next century and beyond. But more than that...

As an internationally engaged civic university, we address the problems facing humanity. Sharing solutions across an increasingly connected yet polarised world. And guided at every turn by the dedication of our people, our strong sense of place, and the vitality of our partnerships.

People

Our inclusive, supportive and responsible community will enable talented individuals to flourish.

We'll set and achieve ambitious targets for access, continuation, attainment and progression – enabling us to attract and support the success of a diverse range of talented students in sustainable numbers.

We will be recognised by current and future colleagues as an inclusive employer of choice.

Place

Our rich heritage as an institution rooted in our region and our strong international reputation will drive our work as a responsive, globally engaged civic university.

Our innovative education, research and knowledge exchange will lead change that addresses global and local challenges, and generates fair and sustainable solutions.

Our close collaboration with employers will enable the seamless integration of education and training with regional and national workforce planning.

Partnership

As an effective and dynamic partner of choice, we’ll work in strategic collaboration with others to deliver impact with mutual and wider benefit.

Through meaningful and effective partnerships between academic and professional service staff, and with our students, all members of our University community will enjoy an experience that is outstanding.

Our partnerships will advance our strategy, deliver mutual benefits and amplify the impact each partner could achieve alone.

Our values

We're empowering

A civic university equipping people to understand the defining issues of our time. And empowering them to act and shape their personal and collective future for the better.

Defying convention to break new ground

  • We empower people to succeed, recognising that with empowerment comes responsibility and accountability
  • We build people’s confidence through understanding, knowledge, skills and experience
  • We stretch people’s minds and help them develop new ways of thinking and working that will help shape a fairer, brighter future
  • Through equal opportunity, we ensure everyone has the opportunity to shine

We're progressive

A living laboratory. A place where all students, scholars and partners from every faculty collaborate hands-on. Where we generate new thinking in defiance of traditional academic barriers and conventions.

Driven by an unwavering desire for progress

  • We set high standards and challenge ourselves and others to deliver meaningful progress with tangible outcomes
  • We follow and develop best practice across all areas of our activity
  • We work at pace and are always future-facing and, with agility, ready to adapt
  • We learn to be self-reflective so we can seek improvement, make an even bigger difference and embrace a different future
