Pay and pension
A salary that’s always on the up
You’ll earn a very competitive salary which considers your experience, individual contribution and market rates. Most posts have a structured salary progression, ranging from pay bands 1–9.
We pay annual increments subject to satisfactory service on the date specified in your contract. This is normally 1 August, if you’ve completed more than six months’ service in your current pay band.
A generous pension to help secure your future
Enjoy an excellent pension through the Universities Superannuation Scheme (USS). It’s a salary-related scheme based on employee and employer contributions.

Progression and recognition
Inspirational leaders found their inspiration at Hull
We want you to have a long-term career with us, so we'll support you every step of the way. You'll find a range of training, development and leadership opportunities delivered in-house, online and externally. And we’re always working to create clearer career pathways and offer more opportunities for internal progression.
Holidays and hybrid working
Need a holiday? Take 25.
You’ll enjoy a generous annual leave package of 25 days basic holiday, plus three extra days for both Christmas and Easter. That's on top of public Bank Holidays.
We’re hybrid. Because the best work isn’t always done at work.
The standard working week is 36.5 hours, but this can vary depending on your contract. Need to work around family or other commitments? We offer flexible working arrangements. And we’ve embraced hybrid working wherever a role allows it, offering a mix of on-campus and at-home days.
What’s most important in our lives? Family.
We recognise the importance of family life. So we offer a range of benefits, including up to 76 weeks of maternity or adoption leave. As well as paternity leave, parental leave, dependants' leave, carer’s leave, and leave for fertility treatment.
Children are allowed to play on this site
There’s a private nursery called Little Einsteins based right here on campus. Our staff tell us it’s incredibly handy to have nearby for quick morning drop-offs and easy evening pick-ups.
Health and wellbeing
Asking for help can be hard. Getting it is easy.
We’re here for you whatever you’re going through. Our Occupational Health and Wellbeing service offers confidential support for your physical, social, workplace, financial, spiritual and emotional wellbeing.
Our trained Mental Health First Aiders are also on hand to guide you. And thanks to our close links with local providers, you can benefit from free counselling sessions.
Should’ve gone to us before Specsavers
Use a computer for work? Get in touch with our Occupational Health team before you book, and you could qualify for a free DSE (display screen equipment) eye test once every two years.

People and place
A beautiful place to work and play
Situated in the leafy suburb of Newland, our beautiful campus is well known for its friendly atmosphere. Home to 1000+ trees, rose-filled lawns, and ivy-clad red-brick buildings.
Alongside our characterful older buildings and green spaces, you’ll find supermodern facilities. A 7-storey library, sports and fitness centre, world-class concert hall, surround-sound cinema, and art gallery. As well as Costa coffee shops, cafés, bars and eateries.
Hull is full of different like-minded people
The University is one of the largest and most diverse employers in the region. We employ around 2,000 people – more than half of them women – from all over the UK and nearly 40 other countries around the world.
We are proud to have some of the best professors, lecturers, research and professional services staff around. So you’ll get the chance to work with people whose skills, interests and ambitions match yours.
Equality, diversity and inclusivity are inseparable
Whose role is it to make our university a welcoming safe place where everyone can thrive? Everyone’s. Our team works with all departments and faculties across the University to embed EDI in everything we do.
We’re building a community that’s free from prejudice, discrimination and unfair treatment. A place where our people feel supported and valued, so they can succeed and thrive. To achieve this, we commit to:
- Treat all staff and students fairly
- Create a welcoming and inclusive culture for all
- Promote equality of opportunity so everyone can reach their full potential
- Equip our people with the skills to challenge inequality and discrimination
- Ensure all our policies and materials do not discriminate
