Our Purpose
A future of making history
Our motto, Lampada Ferens, translates as ‘carrying the light of learning’. Over the years, we’ve shared this light with generations of learners. We’ve illuminated some of the darkest issues facing the world – from slavery and social injustice to cancer and climate change.
As one of England’s oldest universities, we’ll always look back on our past with pride, but we’re forever moving forwards. Exploring new and better ways to live and learn for the benefit of humanity’s shared future.
A degree from Hull is both a hallmark of quality and a badge of honour. A time-trusted education that prepares you for doing what’s right and true: for you, for society, for the world.
Our Research
We’re tired of bad news.
So we’re doing some good.
We’re research leaders in clean energy, flood resilience, cancer and wound care, and the fight against modern slavery.
Our research is helping build the largest wind farms in the world. It’s also helping students build successful careers in growth sectors like A.I., flood risk management, social justice and renewable energy.
Tired of bad news too? Join us, and make some good.
Our vision
Shaping a fairer, brighter,
carbon-neutral future for all
Hull’s never been one to stand still. We prefer to stand up, stand out. Act, rather than react.
Now more than ever, ethics, sustainability and social responsibility need to be at the forefront of every decision. The difference with us is, we don’t just tell you this. We show you.
As we speak, our academics are busy tackling some of the planet’s greatest problems head on. Their research is helping more patients to beat cancer, more communities to prepare for rising flood risks, and more organisations to root out modern day slavery. So everything you learn equips you for the challenges of tomorrow.
Unlocking the floodgates to flood resilience
Our flooding experts are driving the national and international flood resilience agenda.
Our research has shaped national flood resilience policy and practice for 15 years, uniting agencies to protect and help people recover from devastating flood events. We continue to drive action through partnerships like Living with Water.
Taking a patient approach to improving healthcare
Our nursing academics are helping to reduce hospital admissions and visits to A&E.
Nearly 3m people in the UK can be described as frail, and research suggests they require c.40% of all hospital beds and GP resources. Our evaluation shows how unnecessary A&E attendances and hospital admissions for frail individuals can be avoided.
How do we stand up to modern slavery? Together.
Through the Humber Modern Slavery Partnership we stand together to protect human rights.
Our knowledge informs proactive initiatives to help victims and survivors. Steering a partnership of over 60 national and local organisations, we address the structures and conditions in which exploitation occurs, uncovering more cases than ever.
Propelling the future of offshore wind
Driving faster adoption of clean, renewable offshore wind energy - reducing our reliance on fossil fuels.
Our researchers are working with the offshore wind sector to secure a brighter, carbon-neutral future. We’re improving wind turbine models, driving down cost and accelerating the adoption of offshore wind power, moving closer to net zero.
Promoting economic growth and regeneration
Partnerships and Knowledge Exchange at the University of Hull.
Knowledge Exchange is a collaborative endeavour that translates knowledge and research into impact. It includes a set of activities, processes and skills that enable close collaboration between universities and partner organisations to deliver commercial, environmental and cultural benefits.
Our Academics
Teaching worth it’s weight in Gold
Hull is rated Gold in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) 2023. The highest possible ranking for teaching quality and student success.
The TEF is a national scheme run by the Office for Students (OfS). It aims to incentivise excellence in teaching, learning and student outcomes.
Over two-thirds of all teaching staff have credentials of excellence in teaching and educational leadership through Fellowship of the Higher Education Academy.
Our Campus
Find your haven in a sea of change

Our Alumni
Change the world, or change your world?
You’re free to do both at Hull. From life-savers to Prime Ministers and Nobel Prize winners to Academy Award regulars, our alumni have changed the world throughout our almost 100-year history.
Dame Sarah Gilbert – who co-developed the Oxford AstraZeneca Covid vaccine – and Professor Guido Imbens, a Nobel Prize winner for Economics, both started out at Hull.
Take a look at our world changers and future makers.
Our city
Life starts at the end of the line
Hull is often seen as a place apart. Yet one that plays its part on the world stage: pushing, performing, punching way above its weight.
This proud port has launched generations of freethinkers and changemakers to the world. Take famous abolitionist and Hull MP William Wilberforce. Or headscarf revolutionary Lilian Biloca. Or poet Philip Larkin, who was Head Librarian here for 30 years.
Today’s Hull is still a haven for unconventionally brilliant minds. Maybe there’s something in the water here? Well, this is your chance to find out.
