How we support your research

Research isn't just about the breakthroughs. Grants need to be applied for, collaborations forged, impact analysed and results published. Doing these things well takes time and specialist knowledge, that's why we have a team of people dedicated to supporting you behind the scenes so you can do what you do best - your research.

We develop our researchers

We offer researchers flexible training and development opportunities including workshops, one-to-one and online learning. We encourage you to conduct robust and high-quality research by endorsing current best practice, in line with regulatory and legislative expectations. We’ll help with sourcing funds and applying for grants, and offer clear guidance on navigating the complex research governance frameworks.

We encourage excellent leadership

We support your career development and progression through peer-based mentoring and leadership programmes. We offer training and development in each of the faculties and through opportunities based in the University's Learning and Development Team. These include sessions in writing and peer-review training, and cover areas such as core leadership skills, student supervision skills and understanding the research-funding landscape.

We find pathways to excellence

Our research has a genuine real-world basis. Finding and translating the impact from our work is a core part of our culture. Our Research Excellence Team works to support the University's research standards and maintain our vibrant research culture. This not only includes planning and preparations for our Research Excellence Framework submission, but also research impact guidance and support with integrating non-academic impact into funding applications.

Cutting edge facilities to make your research happen

Viper - High Performance Computer

Viper is one of the leading High Performance Computing centres in the university sector, and the highest rated in the north of England. It can be used in a huge variety of ways, from single and multiple node tasks, high memory tasks and accelerated calculations among others.

Total Environment Simulator

The Total Environment Simulator (TES), based at The Deep aquarium, is a large world-class experimental facility designed for modelling environmental fluid and sediment dynamics in a wide range of settings and conditions. Its flexible modelling environment means we can simulate a huge variety of environmental conditions - from sea beds on Earth to hill slopes on Mars.

HIVE - Hull Immersive Visualization Environment

The Hull Immersive Visualization Environment (HIVE) provides researchers and industrial clients with an array of advanced visualization, motion capture and computer graphics technology.

Positron Emission Tomography CT scanner

The University of Hull is one of very few universities nationwide to have its own dedicated PET-CT scanner. This state-of-the-art facility uses medical imaging technology for research and the early diagnosis of diseases such as cancer and dementia.
