Humanities DAIM

Research areas

Humanities DAIM encompasses both data science and AI-driven applications in the humanities, and reflection on the social context and impacts of AI. Data science and AI tools are being used more widely within academia, including in disciplines such as music within the humanities. At the same time, humanities disciplines such as philosophy, sociology, law and history have informed our understanding of AI ethics and its role in society, helping to address challenges of bias, discrimination and to guide regulation.

We apply data science and AI tools to problems in humanities (for example in the field of music). We also use insights and approaches from disciplines such as history, law and philosophy to reflect on the role and place of AI in society, AI ethics, and Responsible AI, which has relevance also to work in other areas such as business and healthcare. Research on applications of AI in the humanities is growing steadily within DAIM, and we have recently begun projects on AI literacy and data governance in the cultural heritage sector. A number of our PhD students are working on topics such as music, aesthetics and ethics.
