University statement: upsetting scenes are not representative of our wonderful city or university

As a university committed to diversity, inclusion, and mutual respect, the distressing scenes witnessed in parts of the UK are in direct conflict with our core values and the inclusive environment we strive to foster.

This abhorrent behaviour from a very small minority has impacted many communities, and we recognise and understand the events over the past few days may have caused distress, fear, and uncertainty.

We’re incredibly proud of our diverse community. Our commitment to providing a safe space for our staff, students and wider community to come together to work and study is unwavering, with robust measures in place to ensure this.

Discrimination, hatred and violence have no place here and the upsetting scenes at the weekend are not representative of our wonderful city or university.

As always, we are here to support our student and staff community and have a range of support services available:

Our campus has a 24/7 security presence, 365 days a year. We also have a dedicated 24/7 security number for students and staff to contact should they feel they need it.

We regularly review security arrangements on campus to ensure a safe and secure environment for students, staff and visitors at all times.

Finally, it is incredibly heartwarming to see our community coming together to support one another as we navigate this difficult period. It is essential that we continue to do so, and we encourage our staff and students to continue to check on the wellbeing of friends and colleagues at this challenging time.
