The University of Hull is celebrating the results of the 2024 National Student Survey (NSS), announced this week, which show we are ahead of the sector in 22 out of the 27 areas surveyed.
The NSS is a high-profile annual survey of nearly half a million students across the UK. It provides final-year students with the chance to look back on their higher education experience and speak out on everything from teaching to mental health support.
In this year’s results, the University of Hull has improved overall since 2023, with the highest improvement in the ‘Academic Support’ theme and improvements in 20 out of 27 questions across 7 out of 9 NSS themes.
The results of the survey build on the University’s Gold rating in the Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF) – which rated our student experience and student outcomes as “typically outstanding”.
Professor Kevin Kerrigan, Deputy Vice-Chancellor at the University of Hull, said: “The NSS gives our students the opportunity to let us know about the quality of their student experience here in Hull. We pride ourselves on listening to what they tell us – and by acting on this – we can make sure we provide a student experience that is truly exceptional.
“I’m delighted that we have improved again overall – and I’m particularly pleased that we have driven advances in the way we communicate our mental wellbeing services to our students and that this has been recognised in our survey results.”
Questions around how good our teaching staff are at explaining things, and the support of our library resources, also continue to have very high positivity ratings.
“We have worked incredibly hard at the University of Hull to enhance the student experience – and these positive results are testimony to the dedication of our staff and their commitment to providing the best learning journey for our students,” said Professor Kerrigan.
Although the NSS results are only one indication of success, they provide the University with valuable information and insight that can be used to identify areas of best practice and review areas for improvement.
For visitors attending this Saturday’s Open Day or contemplating applying to the University of Hull through Clearing – the results reinforce the quality of the student experience in Hull.
Last year, the Times Higher Education (THE) ranked the University of Hull in the top 20 in the UK in its ‘overall positivity’ measure based on the 2023 NSS results. It is anticipated that THE may also provide a new ranking for 2024 next month.
