Equality, Diversity and Inclusion

Our Commitment

At the University of Hull, people are our biggest asset.

This is why we are committed to promoting equality of opportunity for all, giving every individual the chance to achieve their potential, free from prejudice and discrimination. We are committed to creating a welcoming, inviting, and inclusive environment where our people feel supported and valued, enabling them to succeed and thrive.

We use our diverse backgrounds to enhance professional knowledge, bring challenge and new perspectives to what we do on campus - everyone has a voice here. This means that whatever we do we put the people at the heart of our aims. We know that organisations that embrace equality, diversity and inclusion have happier people, who enjoy their time at the university more no matter staff or student.

Furthermore, a happier community will deliver better results, be more motivated and strive for innovation. Embracing equality, diversity, and inclusion benefits all of us and makes for a more pleasant experience.

Everyone has a role to play in embedding equality, diversity and inclusion, whether at work, learning, research or teaching. We are building a community that is free from discrimination and unfair treatment. This means the University of Hull is committed to eliminating unlawful discrimination, harassment and victimisation, advancing equality of opportunity and fostering good relations between people of all different identities. We do this by:

  • Treating all staff and students fairly
  • Creating an inclusive culture for all staff and students
  • Ensuring equal access to opportunities to enable students to fully participate in the learning process
  • Enabling all staff and students to develop to their full potential
  • Equipping staff and students with the skills to challenge inequality and discrimination in their work and study environment
  • Making certain that any learning materials do not discriminate against any individuals or groups
  • Ensuring policies, procedures and processes do not discriminate

Our team works with all departments and faculties across the University to embed equality and diversity in everything we do. Our main objective is to ensure that the university is welcoming and inclusive to all staff, students and guests that touch our campus or interact with the university.

The Equality Act 2010

The Equality Act provides a legal framework in order to protect the rights of individuals and advance equality for all. There are nine characteristics that are protected under the act. This means that you and everyone in the UK is protected under the law from discrimination, harassment or victimisation on the grounds of:

  • Age
  • Disability
  • Gender reassignment
  • Marriage and civil partnership
  • Pregnancy and Maternity
  • Race
  • Religion or belief
  • Sex and Sexual orientation

Additional university-recognised characteristics:

  • Caring responsibilities
  • Socio-economic background
  • Race at Work Charter

We are a signatory of the Business in the Community (BiTC) Race at Work Charter. We know that ethnic minorities still face significant disparities in employment and progression, and that is something we need to change. The Charter is composed of five calls to action for leaders and organisations across all sectors.

    • Appoint an Executive Sponsor for race
    • Capture ethnicity data and publicise progress
    • Commit at board level to zero tolerance of harassment and bullying
    • Make clear that supporting equality in the workplace is the responsibility of all leaders and managers
    • Take action that supports ethnic minority career progression

Signing up means taking practical steps to ensure we are tackling barriers that ethnic minority people face in recruitment and progression and that we are representative of British society today. We are committed to the BiTC calls to action and will work closely with our executive sponsor.

  • Athena Swan Charter

The Athena Swan Charter is a framework which is used across the globe to support and transform gender equality within higher education (HE) and research. Established in 2005 to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science, technology, engineering, maths and medicine (STEMM) employment, the Charter is now being used across the globe to address gender equality more broadly, and not just barriers to progression that affect women.
We hold a Bronze Athena Swan Award. We were early adopters of the Athena Swan Charter and continue to develop innovative best practice in this area. We are working to reduce our gender pay gap and to improve gender representation at all levels of employment in the organisation.

    Gender Pay Gap

We produce a yearly Gender Pay Gap report which measures how our organisation is providing equality of opportunity.

  • Trans and Non-binary Community

We have a commitment to ensuring that our campus and community are safe, inclusive and welcoming to all staff, students and guests. We regularly review our guidance for staff and students to ensure that our guidance is fit for purpose and contains gender-neutral language. We have Parent and Carers guidance and Trans guidance available to staff and students.
