University re-explained: a new guide for parents and carers
Worried about saying the wrong thing? Our easy-to-follow parents’ guide gives you the confidence and information you need to help your child make the right choice for their future.
Our advice is to seek the best advice
We know this is a big decision for your child. One that could shape their whole life. And they’ll be turning to you for advice and support along the way. But remember, you’re not alone. Our job is to help you do yours.
As well as university experts, we’re parents and carers too. So, you can be sure you’re getting the best advice from people who truly understand. We’ve been through the UCAS forms, counted the pennies of student finance, and faced the empty nest (trust us, it does get easier!).
Different families deserve the same advice
For ease, we use ‘parent’, ‘child’ and ‘son or daughter’ in this guide. But we want to acknowledge that you and your young person may use different terms, and you may be a carer or guardian instead. Rest assured, the advice is still the same. But if you’re in doubt, please do get in touch.
When they turn to you,
you turn to us.

Next steps
Want to get ahead? We’re right behind you.
As you know, getting a head start can make all the difference in life and work. So, whether your young person is already set on going to university or they haven’t considered it yet, now’s the time to start planning. To help you both prepare, here are three things you can do right now.
Book their university visits
Do they already have their eye on a few universities? As one of our parents said: “Visit, visit, visit!” Get them booked in and help them make the right choice – with their head and their heart. Some unis offer help with travel costs. Our Open Day travel grant is worth up to £100.
Get the university prospectus
Subjects, fees, accommodation, campus and city life: the university prospectus has pretty much all you need to know in one place. It’s not the complete A-Z guide, but it’s a good shop window to give you a better idea of what the university offers.
Take a virtual tour
Many universities – including us – are now offering a virtual tour. It’ll never replace seeing us for real, but it is a great way for you both to scope out the campus and city before you get here.
